Separate collection and treatment of biowaste aimed at energy exploitation and organic matter recovery: state of the art in Trentino Italy Head, biomass and renewable energy unit 6th March 2012 Växjö SWEDEN 1

SUMMARY Introduction Overview on waste production in Italy Composting and anaerobic digestion of biomass The situation in Trentino The role of separate collection Operating plants and future trends Conclusions 2

INTRODUCTION The European policy for URBAN WASTE treatment and disposal states the following priorities: 1. Reduce the production 2. Recovery and Recycling materials 3. Recovery of energy and aslast solution 4. Final disposal 3

Each region/province has to be self-sufficient in the final disposal, while the treatment plants have to respect economy scale principles. Recovery of materials Burning Compostingand Composting Anaerobic digestion and/or AD Landfills 4

Treatment and disposal forms of solid waste in Italy (ISPRA, 2011) Material rec 16,7% Mean data (2009) Total Solid Waste: tons Production/procapita: 541 kg/year Separate collection: 33,6 %(178 kg) Composting +AD 9,1 % MBT 20,10% Energy 12,5% Landfill 40,6% Main materials Biowaste 62 kg/inhab/y Paper 49,1 Glass 28,2 Wood 11,2 Plastic 10,2 Metals 5,6 5

The composting sector in Italy More than200 facilities(69% in NorthernItaly) Treatment capacity n 43 < 1000 tons/year n 180 > 1000 tons/year 90 compost producers (150 plants) ) are associated to the CIC: The Good Quality compost can be marketed without any restrictions when it respects the limits stated by the National law(l. 75/2010) 70% in the Open field 30% for gardening and hobby sectors 7

The anaerobic digestion (AD) in Italy 18 facilities for the biological treatment of biowaste and sewage sludge 521 plants for agricultural waste BIOGAS: methane 50-65% CO % CO, H 2 S, H 2 Electricenergy and heatin CHP EFFLUENT: soil fertilizer after composting NEW: upgrading of biogas to biomethane for grid injection and use in vehicles 8

TRENTINO is an Alpine Region in Northern Italy people( equiv.inhab.) - High touristic vocation - Area6,200 km 2-60% of theterritoryiswoodland - 70% isover1000 metersabovesealevel - Hydroelectric and wood biomass arethemainusedres - Natural Gas (NG) grid is present in most part of the Province 9

III Update of the Provincial Plan for solid waste disposal (year 2006) Target to 2009: 70% of separate collection(all fractions) In 2010 : 66.3% wasthe provincialaverage Biowaste (tons/year) Wood (tons/year) Source selection: 80% 70% Estimatedamounts: kg/inhab/year Year kg/inhab/year 73,

Different types of systems for the selective collection of biowaste and materials are active on the territory: 1. Waste bin on the street 2. Door to door system 3. Centralized collection in 146 CRM and 14 CRZ CRM= Centers recovery materials (urban fractions) 6th March 2012 Växjö SWEDEN 12

CONCLUSIONS The separate collection permits to recover and to recycle: the organicmatter(biowaste+ yard waste) withthe aimto produce a soil fertilizer of good quality for agricultural use the materials destined to reuse after proper treatments The anaerobicdigestionisat the moment the best system forthe treatment of the biodegradable fractions to obtain: renewableenergy(biogas) and organic matter for soil. The purification of biogas to biomethane for the injection into the grid and use for transport is promoted at EU level. National standards of quality and incentives are under definition. The BIO-EN-AREA sub-project Biogas & Network (coordinated by Sweden) and the IEE project BIOMASTER ( are the maininitiativesinvolvingthe Trentino on thesenewsectors. 15
