5 n late 2006 the slaughtering yard Karlsruhe was clsed dwn and a thught was slwly put int actin. First steps were made t recnstruct the 7 hectare big frmer slaughtering yard area, which is right in the centre f the city, int a new cultural and creative centre as well as an art trade. Develped has the creative park Alter Schlachthf Karlsruhe, which ffers artists and creative flks a mix f extrardinary ambience and facilities, which brings the innvative cncepts and ideas t fruitin. 3:.

7 Twn master masn Wilhelm Strieder started the cnstructin f the slaughtering yard A tw-winged plant was built, which was enclsed by walls lying n the utskirts f the city. The plant is preserved in its basic set up till tday, ld buildings with sandstne facades still give a hint f what the place was frmerly used fr: On the ne side the slaughtering yard, where meat was butchered and prcessed, n the ther side the stckyard where the animals were examined and the trading happened. n the 1970s the increased meat demand and the altered hygienic guidelines necessitated an extensin f the slaughtering yard. n this perid the functinality f the cnstructin had pririty. The rugh rather utilitarian buildings f the secnd cnstructin perid are an appealing cntrast t the highly demanding and representatively cnstructed buildings f the late 19th century. Bth are invlved in the cnversin prcess f the building.

8 Even befre the slaughtering yard was clsed dwn 2006 the decisin was made t preserve the area in its cnditin as much as pssible and in particular t nt structurally intervene with the histric buildings. The incmparable identity f the building and the memry f the place shall be preserved, the cmbinatin f ld and yung shall serve as the surce f inspiratin and the user and their perceptins shall be actively invlved in the design prcess. :: 6

When the Federal Gvernment initiated the "nitiative Cultural and Creative ndustries" in autumn 2007, many ther cities had already recgnised the huge ptential f this sectr and started building centres fr artists, cultural establishments and the creative trade, amng them the city f Karlsruhe that had already started the legal and infrastructural transfrmatin f the cnversin f the slaughterhuse area. Art and culture as an ecnmic engine - this was cnsidered impssible fr a lng time. But in a fast changing and glbalized wrld inventiveness and individuality guarantee success. Established cmpanies and firms seek cnsciusly fr lcatins, where creative ptential is meant t be fund. Trend-setting innvatins and sustainable jbs result frm creativity. Bth are inevitable factrs f sustainable urban develpment. 9:.

T succeed in the 21th century every city has t ffer their inhabitants an envirnment utside the daily wrk-life that is wrth living. These include places and lcatins, which are captivating by way f their extrardinary atmsphere and their distinctive identity, places like the Alte Schlachthf.

13 Cnversin The Alte Schlachthf shall be cnverted int a centre f cultural and creative industries. The Federal Gvernment apprtins eleven submarkets t this industry, the architecture market, the bk market, the design industry, the film industry, the music industry, the press market, the bradcasting industry, the sftware and games industries, the advertising industry and the industry f perfrming arts. Representatives f each market shuld and will be present in the area at all times. Therefre there will be, besides ffices and agency facilities, wrkshps and ateliers, music and film studis, as well as venue and exhibitin areas fr artists, wh live nearby r in the city. The spatial prximity facilitates synergetic creatin and satisfies the requirements f the industry. Their mst imprtant attribute is the clse cllabratin f actrs f the different submarkets. 11:.

14 One imprtant element f the cnversin is the business incubatr centre Perfekt Futur, which was built in the ld pig meat market hall f the stckyard. Funders f new businesses in the creative industries are given an affrdable first lcatin in an innvative atmsphere, especially fr thse wh are graduates f the Karlsruhe universities. A city f shipment cntainers, which can be rented by the users as a wrk statin, has develped in the hangar. The stacked and lsely arranged cntainers functin as small and enclsed wrk statins in an extrardinary surrunding. The pen spaces arund the cntainers can be used fr exhibitins and venues and als as grup wrkplaces and jint lunge area. The business incubatin centre Perfekt Futur is hugely imprtant fr the creative cluster Alte Schlachthf, it accmplishes sustainable and future-riented jbs and reinfrces the culture and creative industries as the mst imprtant lcatinal factr f the city.

15 @ V X V V V V V V Lcatin and Develpment The Alte Schlachthf is lcated in the east f the city Karlsruhe, clse t the city centre, and is well cnnected t the mtrway and public transprtatin. t is nt far away frm the imprtant educatinal establishments and very clse t the park f Schlss Gttesaue. Therefre it is nt nly a wrkplace but als a recreatin grund and a venue. 13:.

16 The basic design cncept was develped under cnsideratin f the special cnditins f the area and is fixed in a design handbk. This handbk envisages the preservatin f the Alte Schlachthf with its characteristic attributes as far as pssible and t underline its identity thrugh purpseful emphasis. The public space, this means the space between the buildings, was merely prductive land in the past. With the cnversin f the area the demands have changed. The new users use the public space as lunge area. n the s called aura znes the inner functin f the buildings is taken utside. This is nt nly the way these unusual wrking spaces emerged, but it is als the pprtunity fr the visitrs t bserve the wrk and creative thinking f the users. The Alte Schlachthf prvides traffic areas and parking spaces, but is als a temprary venue fr events with a rugh curtyard character, which shall be sustained. Fr this reasn there will be n streets r pavements in the prper sense f the wrd, all rad users are equal and can mve freely n the terrain. :: 14

17 The public space shall be newly designed by creating mre green areas and furnishing in a nvel way, with fcus n a harmnius verall appearance. The furniture in the utdr area is suppsed t invite t a spntaneus apprpriatin and the creative green areas shuld underline the place s character. That is hw the area becmes an urban place with seating-accmmdatins that underlines the ambience f the Alte Schlachthf and gives it a new quality. 15:.

18 At the slaughtering yard are many heritage-prtected industrial and cmmercial buildings, which were built in the end f the 19th century. They are suppsed t cntinue t bear witness abut the frmer use f the area. The ld building structures are cmpleted by new buildings, which d nt cpy the histric architectural style, but rather distinguish themselves clearly thrugh mdern architecture. The new buildings can be recgnised thrugh their cube-shaped structure, the bright basic tint f their facades and their flat rfs, which are used privately as green areas and make the prducing f renewable energies pssible. While the new buildings f the area are mstly built f the same height as the ld nes, a visible tken is planned, functining as a peak that shall hint at the Alte Schlachthf frm afar. :: 16
