CLIMATE DATA AND SERVICES FOR ADAPTATION PLANNING PRAIRIES REGIONAL ADAPTATION COLLABORATIVE REGIONAL WORKSHOP 2018

JOURNEY TO THE PAN-CANADIAN FRAMEWORK December 2015 March 2016 Paris Climate Conference (COP21) Vancouver Declaration on Clean Growth and Climate Change October 2016 December 2016 Canada ratifies the Paris Agreement after a successful vote in Parliament Canada s first pan-canadian climate change plan 2

PAN-CANADIAN FRAMEWORK 4 PILLARS Pricing carbon pollution Complementary mitigation actions across all sectors Adaptation and climate resilience Clean technology, innovation & jobs 3

CANADIAN CENTRE FOR CLIMATE SERVICES Recommendation from the Pan-Canadian Framework on Clean Growth and Climate Change - developed with Provinces & Territories in consultation with Indigenous peoples To improve access to climate science To serve as the authoritative Main federal text source for credible, useful and timely climate information, data, and tools To strengthen national and regional capacity to incorporate climate change considerations in decision-making 4

WHAT ARE CLIMATE SERVICES? Climate services help people, communities, and economic sectors plan for climate change How may the predicted changes in rain fall impact how or what I farm? What plans do we need to implement to protect important species Should I plan to design and construct infrastructure differently? What measures should we be implementing to ensure future access to drinking water

WHY ARE CLIMATE SERVICES NEEDED? Can no longer only use the past historical conditions as a predictor for future climate To increase understanding of current and future climate vulnerabilities, risks, and opportunities To support planning and decision-making to be more resilient to the expected impacts of future climate change 6

CLIMATE SERVICES INCLUDE Easy access to reliable historical and future climate data and information to help you understand climate change and its impacts Translation of science into information and tools that are clear, meaningful and easy to apply Collaboration with experts and users to develop new products Training and guidance on how to incorporate climate considerations into your decisions 7

ABOUT THE CCCS The CCCS is a multi-disciplinary team with expertise across a broad range of climate-related disciplines We work with partners and stakeholders to help Canadians understand, and become more SECOND resilient LEVEL to climate SECOND change LEVEL by: 1. delivering climate services driven by user needs 2. offering training and support 3. building local capacity 4. providing access to climate information 8

1. USER DRIVEN SERVICES Engagement, outreach, training Projects to assess needs of key user groups: sectors, regions, etc. Expert Advisory Panel Feedback 9

2. SUPPORT DESK & TRAINING Assist users in finding, understanding and using climate data, information and tools to consider climate change in planning and decision-making. In addition to the Climate Services Support Desk officers, experts from across federal departments and regional climate Main consortia text are prepared to help respond to user requests. Training program still in development. 10

examples of CCCS Support Services Problem Want to know what the climate is projected to look like in your hometown in the future? Climate services solution Suggest resources and visuals based on climate data and information to help you understand the changing climate you may face Need to incorporate future climate change considerations in the plans for a new drainage system for your community? can help you select the appropriate dataset(s) to inform design of your system. How to download the data for the last 20 years? can guide you to extract and download the data. 11

3. NATIONAL & REGIONAL CAPACITY Climate services will be jointly delivered using a coordinated national and regional approach 12

4. ACCESS TO CLIMATE INFORMATION Different types of users: General, Intermediate, Advanced need different types /formats of information CCCS is collaborator on Climate Atlas Launch CCCS website climate information basics, Library of resources, datasets to view and download, access support. Next Phase: collaborative climate information platform Additional datasets and analytical capabilities 13

INCORPORATING CLIMATE CHANGE INTO DECISION-MAKING First Step Understand how the climate interacts with your area of interest Use these main types of climate information: historical climate data records of past impacts related to severe weather or climate conditions Indigenous knowledge Combine different types of climate information to provide an understanding of how the past conditions impact your area of interest create new opportunities or new risks. 14

INCORPORATING CLIMATE CHANGE INTO DECISION-MAKING Next Step Consider what the future climate may look like in order to make climate-smart decisions. Near-future can use seasonal climate forecasts Longer timeframes should use climate projections Climate projections are constructed based on two distinct elements: greenhouse gas emissions scenarios simulations with climate models 15

CLIMATE BASICS: TRENDS & PROJECTIONS Temperature, Precipitation, Sea Ice, Snow Depth Includes: Key concepts Patterns over time Impacts of change Adapting to change Other resources 17

CLIMATE BASICS: SCENARIOS & MODELS Describes: Emission scenarios Models & SECOND projections LEVEL Main text Uncertainty Other resources 18

Key Points: A searchable collection of links to climate datasets, tools, guidance and related resources Sources include federal, provincial and territorial governments, national professional organizations, climate consortia Useful for impact, vulnerability and risk assessments, and for adaptation planning 21

Key Points: - Intermediate users - View national datasets - Location search - Zoom in/out - Create maps and images:.png and.jpeg 22

CLIMATE DATA EXTRACTION TOOL - Advanced users - Can find, map and download: - Historical and future climate projections - Historical station data (e.g. climate normals ) - Historical gridded data - Download formats depends on dataset:.csv files for spreadsheets.geotiff for GIS.NetCDF and more 23

CLOSING THOUGHTS The CCCS and network of Hubs will help you find, explore and access information and provide support to (for example) find inputs for risk and vulnerability analysis find inputs for design of future community development help understand what you are looking for! Phased approach starts in October with official launch of CCCS Support Desk will assist & support you may still need to engage other experts (e.g. consultant; climate impact researcher). 24
