9 19 NATURAL GAS TRANSMISSION SYSTEM (PGU)

10 NATURAL GAS TRANSMISSION SYSTEM (PGU) PGU I (see route map left) involved the supply of gas produced by GPP 1 for the power, industrial and household users in Terengganu. Pipeline Transmission System from GPP 1 comprises of the following : 20 a 32 km of 36" diameter mainline to the Telok Kalong Industrial Area a 6 km of 20" diameter lateral pipeline to the sultan Ismail power station in Paka a 7 km of 16" diameter lateral pipeline, branching from the 36" diameter mainline to the Perwaja steel mill in Telok Kalong, Kemaman Two 40 km of 8" diameter lateral pipeline for propane and butane distribution to the Export Terminal in Tanjung Sulong, Kemaman five regulating and metering stations

11 NATURAL GAS TRANSMISSION SYSTEM (PGU) The 681 km PGU II main gas pipeline is an extension of PGU I. The pipeline further extended the gas supply to the demand areas located between Kertih and Segamat (including Singapore); and the west coast area between Segamat to Meru, Selangor. Main gas users are the power sector, followed by other industrial and commercial sectors. PGU II is divided into two system: System 1 System 1 involved the laying of a 681 km trans Peninsular main gas pipeline from Telok Kalong in Kemaman, Terengganu to Segamat, Johor, where one line branched southwards to Pasir Gudang and across the Straits of Tebrau to Singapore, and the other mainline continued westwards to Port Klang, Selangor. The Regional Centres function as maintenance as well as service stations to look after the pipeline and to provide readings of sales gas meters for billing purposes. System 2 System 2 Involved the construction of two additional GPPs with a gas processing capacity of 250 mmscfd. GPP 2 and GPP 3 have facilities to extract ethane, in addition to methane, propane, butane and condensate. The entire gas processing operations are being monitored via an integrated distributed control system housed inside the Control Room. GPP 2 came onstream on 24 April 1992 while GPP 3 was operational in early The Export Terminal's refrigeration unit has also been expanded to cater for higher LPG production from GPP 2 and GPP 3 as well as for storage of imported butane. 21

12 NATURAL GAS TRANSMISSION SYSTEM (PGU) The PGU III transmission system is the continuation of PGU II where the supply of gas has been extended to the northern region of the Peninsular along the west coast from Meru in Klang, Selangor to Pauh in Perlis. The 450 km main gas pipeline transmission system is divided into three Sectors :- Sector km of NPS 36" mainline from Meru to Lumut, Perak Sector km of NPS 36" mainline from Lumut to Gurun, Kedah Sector 3-90 km of NPS 36" mainline from Gurun to Pauh, Perlis The pipeline route also cut through strategic demand areas that would allow it to capitalise on markets such as industrial centres in Rawang, Sitiawan, Prai, Kulim, Sungai Petani, and Gurun; as well as major residential areas namely Ipoh, Butterworth, Alor Setar and Kangar. To accommodate the increase in gas demand, two additional GPPs have been constructed in Kg. Tok Arun, which is about 15 km to the north of existing GPP complex in Kertih. Each designed to produce a total of 1000 mmscfd of sales gas, GPP 5 has been in operation since December 1998; and GPP 6 since Under PGU III, a fifth and sixth Regional Office has also been set up in Sitiawan, Perak and Gurun, Kedah respectively. These Regional Offices are strategically located along the transmission system to provide pipeline maintenance and support services, and also serve as liaison offices 12
