Dokukin UNFDUED TRANSLAT;ON For information on!y TRADUCTION NON REVISEE Information seuicnient Centrifugal, water-jet and other types of fish-pumps, employed in the fish industry during work in conditions that do not traumatize the fish, ensure the hoisting of the water- fish mixture to a hèight of meters. At the present state of development of fisheries, especially with the appearance of such ships as the floating base "Vostok", there arises the necessity of hoisting the fish to heights of more than 20 meters. For this it is necessary to pump the water-fish mixture by means of two or three fish pump units arranged in series (the "tandem" method), with each unit having its own drive, which is connected with large losse's of energy, SOS

5 2 complications in the operation of the machinery and an increase in the operating personnel. The multiple-stage centrifugal pumps that are generally employed under these conditions have the following constructional features. The impellers of all stages are are located on one shaft. All of the components forming the pump assembly (including the impellers, outlet duct and diffuser) are unified. Owing to the single shaft and the unification of the impellers the liquid being pumped, which passes out from the impeller in a radial direction, returns to the impeller of the following stage and acquires an axial direction, at the same time flowing around the rotating shaft and making sharp turns - of and 90 0 (Figure la). Sometimes, in order to decrease the axial loads on the shaft, the impellers of each stage are isolated from one another, and the liguid passes through connecting piping. In this case the machine becomes less compact, while the number of turns'of the hydraulic stream remains as before (Figure lb). Thus, the inevitability of the sharp turns in the stream does not permit one to proceed along the path which is well known already in hydraulic mechanical engineering. 118 Figure 1.

6 In connection with this it is necessary to formulate the conditions exhibited by machinery for pumping fish. A necessary condition is the possibility of pumping the water-fish mixture without damaging the fish*. 3 This condition is ensured in practice by keeping the fish duct relatively free, without any parts or protrusions which could damage the fish. Most suitable for this are pumps with a cantilever impeller and one or two vanes. It is necessary also that the bends in the fish-carrying stream should be smooth (with a radius of curvature no less than six diameters of the duct), while the number of bends should be minimal. To maintain the integrity of the fish in the hydraulic conveyor the velocity of the waterfish mixture along the whole length of the duct should not be higher than the critical value. These considerations determined some of the directions along which the schemes for the two-stage fish pump were developed. The starting point for these developments was the principle of the construction of the tried and well proven domestic fish pump of the RB type from the Mandalakshskii mechanical works, as designed by Giprorybprom. 1 Below are considered alternative methods with which two fish pumps are arranged into a two-stage assembly, as a result of which the total pressure head is proportionally increased, with each stage retaining all. of the positive qualities of the RB fish pump. * This remark does not refer to equipment for pumping fish that is to be used for the production of flour. 1 Translator's note. 7 4. Version I (Figure 2a). Two RB-200 fish pumps were joined in series; each stage has its electrical drive with electrical synchronization of the number of revolutions in each flange-mounted motor. The separate drive allows one to carry out a series of experiments, varying the number of revolutions in each stage of the fish pump. In this version llç it is unfortunate that one electric motor has a horizontal shaft, while the second one has a vertical one, and although this is not of substantial importance in large series, a modification may be suggested, envisaging the use of two identical non-flanged motors with a horizontal shaft (Figure 2b). nece4 in 1 SO _elça Poo.2. 8 'Version II (Figure 3). The fish pumps were connected - by piping with two elbow joints and work from one electric motor with a double-ended projection of the drive shaft. The drawback of this method is that in it the fish stream changes direction more frequently than in the other designs...however this assembly permits one to carry out a series of experiments for elucidating the optimal design for the connecting fish duct. The two-stage fish pump is set up on a single foundation and allows foi the maximal utilization of existing equipment. From the figure it is evident that this fish pump occupies a greater area than the two described above. Pme.3. Figure 3. Version III (Figure 4). The third scheme for assembling the stages of the fish pump is based on the two presented above. It occupies a minimal area and is served by a single electric motor. In order to retain the most' suitable arrangement of the 121

9 6 fish duct it is necessary, evidently,.to apply the simplest reduction gears for the power intake, which undoubtedly lowers the total efficiency coefficient of the installation. However the power lossés in the toothed reduction gears are considerably smaller than the hydraulic losses, and therefore this alternative method may be considered as sufficiently economié. In addition, the presence of the toothed coupling gears allows one, when - necessary, to regulate the revolutions of the impellers of both stages of the fish pump. 11.nae md, S0 /500 Summarizing the material presented, the following may be stated. At the present time there has arisen the necessity for equipping the fishing industry with.fish pumps of a higher

10 pressure head tban the existing pumps. In creating a multiple- stage fish pump one.shoilld not take the path of copying the design of the multiple stage centrifugal pumps that are -available ip the hydraulic engineering industry, since by doing this it is not possible to. satisfy the conditions for pumping fish without damage. Pumping fish by the 'tandem" method can serve only as a temporary solution to this problem. Hence arises the necessity for constructing fish pumps on the basi s. of the type RB fish pump which has been well proven in practice. The assembly schemes presented define possible directions for designs. The merits and drawbacks of these schemes may be revealed after more intensive study of each version. 7
