7 European Process, The geographic framework: The European process for the preparation of the Forum concerns: the European Union, Norway and swiss, the Balkans, Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, Russian Federation in general all countries adhering to the UNECE Convention of Central Asia, when concern.

9 European Process, To facilitate the European process of the WWF6, we have created: a coordination consortium, in which we invited the key European networks concerned to participate and play an active role.

11 Specific Europe Region Priority Targets and Solutions Groups 1-Improve transboundary cooperation in Europe: -Implementation of the UNECE 1992 Helsinki Water Convention on transboundary rivers -specificity of the implementation of the European Water Framework Directive in International Districts 2-Achieve a good ecological status of European water bodies by Full implementation of the European Water framework Directive and its daughter Directives on groundwater, marine water and flood management. 3-Adapt to long term water challenges linked to Climate Change and prevent extreme phenomena: Prevention and management of flood risk, Prevention and management of water scarcity and drought risk, demand management, non conventional resources Measures for adaptation to the effects of Climate Change, such as green infrastructures,

12 Specific Europe Region Priority Targets and Solutions Groups 4- Reform the European Common Agricultural Policy and better balance policy between the goals of food security and of sustainable water management : - irrigation, demand management, - diffuse pollution, - discharges of industrial breeding farms, - inland fish farming, - sustainable agricultural techniques, - Water Footprints, virtual water and transfers, 5- Promote better coordination between transport and water policies in relation with inland navigation in Europe: 6- Better coordinate the water and sustainable energy policies: - hydropower, - cooling of nuclear and thermal power plants, - micro-power plants, - energy saving in collective irrigation, - energy saving in drinking water supply and sanitation networks...

13 Specific Europe Region Priority Targets and Solutions Groups 7- Improve European drinking Water and sanitation services: - Give access to the drinking water and sanitation services for the European underprivileged populations, 8 - Improve European drinking Water and sanitation services: -Better manage drinking water supply and sanitation utilities in Europe, promote public public and public-private partnerships, socially acceptable water pricing, industrial and commercial management, etc

14 Specific Europe Region Priority Targets and Solutions Groups 10- Promote technology innovation, Science - policy interface and dialogue between researchers and water managers: 11- Adapt Water management to the specificities of European outermost Regions, the case of European Islands - basins, 12- Develop European cooperation with Third Countries in the water field: - better coordinate cooperation initiative between the European actors, -Increase the human and financial means for cooperation programmes, -Reinforce the neighbouring cooperation of the EU with the Balkans, EECCA and the Mediterranean, - Cooperation between Caribbean countries,

15 Europe Region: Next regional preparatory events At present, 4 regional events have been organized: 1 Central and Eastern Europe and the Balkans: (Bulgaria - Plovdiv, (20-23 March 2011), 2 - The International Istanbul Water Forum (Turkey - Istanbul, from 03 to 05 May 2011), 3- Central Asia (Tashkent - Uzbekistan, May 2011), By the Central Asia specific transcontinental process Coordinator, 4 Euro-Mediterranean countries (Porto, September 2011)
