Illustration of the trend of area requirement in Germany until 2020 Source: BBR 2004 The Problem and the Future Development The local drainage, retention, cleaning and rainwater utilisation are fundamental to modern rainwater management ensuring a long-term resource, protecting and providing cost effective provision of clean and process water for the population. Rainwater: Large volumes of rainwater, especially with residential- and trafficked areas, are drawn from the natural water cycle and directly discharged to the natural drainage system. This discharge is very expensive. Heavy rain quickly causes flooding and surcharging of sewage treatment plants. Land use: The share of residential- and traffic areas is about 12.9 % of the total area (approx. 46,000 km 2 ) in Germany. Experience has shown that half of this area is impermeable. This area must be drained, a fact that has inevitable consequences for the water balance in general and the natural ground water recharge in particular. In spite of renaturation, the constructed environment rises by an average of 115 hectares daily. Local drainage: This kind of drainage supports the natural water cycle and thus discharges into the natural drainage system. It makes an essential contribution to flood protection in river basins, especially. The drainage on property is controlled by building regulations and site specific requirements. The soil characteristics have an important bearing on the calculation of drainage capacity, which will need to be approved by the appropriate authorities. D-Raintanks can be installed piled up to 3 layers high. The D-Raintank has been especially developed for local rain water drainage and control. The D-Raintank is designed for underground use and consists of specially developed plastic modules with a storage capacity of 95 % of total volume. Compared to this, traditional gravel- or crushed rock soakaways attain approx. 30 % - 35 %, hence reducing the necessary excavation by approximately 60%. The modules are light weight and their stability allows them to be combined to form almost unlimited volume and styles of configuration. The stored rain water then reinfiltrates or is discharged at a pre-determined and controlled rate. Its capacity to store water and gradually release it can be used for the irrigation of parks and trees. For this particular use the elements will have to be shrink-wrapped into a water-tight PE membrane and may then be used as rainwater harvesting for future use. Freeway-Elements: On request, Freeway-Elements can be installed. Silts may be flushed out and removed later. Wrapped: The D-Raintank is wrapped in D-Raintank -Geotextile, which filters out fines. This fabric consists of mechanically bonded polypropylene fibres (PP) for water permeability. In the course of these trials both short and long term installations have been tested and comply with the necessary security factors (see page 3 Installation Depth and Cover Height ). Design The design of the D-Raintank was developed and perfected by well coordinated FEM calculations and additional experimental research. The result is a high specification and reliable product developed specifically for installation under trafficked areas. proven quality! Quality Assurance To ensure high and consistent quality of the D-Raintank virgin PP from respected and proven sources is used. Constant internal quality control together with testing and evaluation by independent accredited testing houses is conducted. Amongst other tests, the scope of the internal quality control includes monitoring dimensional consistency and also short and long term component testing.
