Time for a Change An International Perspective on Integrated & Innovative Climate Action John Mauro Chief Sustainability Officer EDS #ccbc18 October 2018

Overview Four principles underpinning climate action Auckland s commitment and an ask Who we turn to Our competition

Principle 1 Integrate across silos to drive elegant outcomes & efficiencies

Principle 2 Innovate to solve tomorrow s problems & build resilience for an uncertain future

Principle 3 Include to create a stronger, fairer & more equitable society

Principle 4 Invest to build value and restore multiple capitals

Auckland s Climate Action Plan rapidly reduce emissions and prepare Auckland for the impacts of climate change

The Why INCREASING TEMPERATURES The average annual temperature in Auckland has increased by about 1.6 C over the past century and is expected to increase through the 21 st century. INCREASE IN EXTREME WEATHER Seasonal rainfall patterns will change with wetter autumns and drier springs. Increasing extreme rainfall intensity is likely because warmer air holds more moisture. INCREASING CHANCE OF DROUGHT Longer dry spells will mean increased potential for drought conditions. Moisture in our soil is expected to decline due to increased evaporation and changing rainfall patterns. SEA LEVEL RISE & OCEANIC CHANGE Sea levels around Auckland have risen. This is expected to continue and potentially accelerate.

The Why
