SCRUBBER SYSTEMS : TECHNOLOGY OVERVIEW, BENEFITS AND MARKET TRENDS. GREEN4SEA FORUM

WHAT A SCRUBBER IS? Robust and effective Sox abatment devices using water as a medium for sulfur absorption. As a side effect...particulate removal 4

The 5 BASIC COMPONENTS of a scrubber 1. A SOURCE OF WATER (SEA WATER, FRESH WATER + REAGENT) 2. PUMPS 3. THE SCRUBBER VESSEL (quench /absorber and droplet separator) 4. TREATMENT PLANT FOR THE WASH WATER (mostly mechanical) 5. MONITORING SYSTEM TO CHECK AIR AND WATER PARAMETERS 5

The 5 MAIN DESIGN parameters 1. WATER FLOW RATES (for sulphur absorption) 2. IN LINE / BY-PASS DESIGN (bottom quench / side quench) 3. WATER / GASES MIXING METHOD (open spray, packed, cyclonic towers, plates) 4. NOZZLES DESIGN AND SPRAY PATTERNS (to increase gas/liquid contact absorption efficiency) 5. DIAMETER AND HEIGHT (gas volume, internal velocity, reaction time) The main differences between the scrubber makers 6

WHY YOU MIGHT NEED A SCRUBBER? For short term ECA trading... but mainly for long term operation flexibility (2020 and beyond) 7

BENEFITS OF A SCRUBBER SYSTEM Not only an upfront investement but a real long term saving opportunity 8

Benefits of a scrubber system Fuel prices dropped, but differential between HFO and MGO is steadily around 250 $ per tons Operators can save between 2-3 M$ of pure fuel costs per annum (50 M$ during the entire ship s life) Flexible solution against the global MGO uncertain availability Payback period < 3 years including installation costs (considering >60% ECA exposure) Suitable for every ship type 9

WHAT YOU CAN HEAR ABOUT SCRUBBERS POLLUTION OF THE SEA NOT A MATURE TECHNOLOGY 10

The SOx cycle and consequences Sox emission from shipping in continuos expansion, causing dry and wet precipitations (acid rains) Dry precipitations ---- Asthma, heart & lung disease Acid rains on land (PH=4) Affect Forests, buildings, lakes Acid rains on sea (PH=4) Sea water act as an huge scrubber Thanks to water Alkalinity, acids get transformed in harmless sulphates & sulphites preventing water acidification. What about the metals, PM, PAH?? 11

SOx emission and water monitoring With scrubbers we save the SO2 emission of : 500 t Ferry, 750 t AFRAM. TANKER, 2000 t LARGE CONTAINER (per annum, per ship) SOX DRY PRECIPITATIONS, AEROSOL, ACID RAINS Scrubbing water continuos monitoring : Ph >6.5 (Neutral) at 4 meter from discharge Turbidity, suspended solid indicator PAH, aromatic and unburned compound indicator 12

AGGRESSIVE MARKET TRENDS ACCEPTANCE ISSUES: ALMOST ALL RELATES TO SCRUBBING WATER DISCHARGE, NOT EMISSIONS TO AIR. OUR MISSION : PROVIDE CUSTOMER WITH THE B.A.T FOR WATER TREATMENT, ABOVE THE IMO REQUIREMENTS WE ARE CONSTANTLY PUSHED TO : REDUCE WATER FLOW (causing lower PH) REDUCE PRICING (...saving on water treatment equip.) REDUCE DIMENSIONS (reducing efficiency) ENVIRONMENT vs COSTS MAKERS, CUSTOMERS, INSTITUTIONS SHOULD WORK TOGHETER FOR A GOOD BALANCE 13

SCRUBBERS ARE A MATURE TECHNOLOGY The most effective Sox removal system for land based application (first application back to 30) Integral part of the inert gas generator systems in tanker ships from the 60. The components (pumps, PHE, valves, ect) are well known in the industry Within 2015 about 50 ships will have a certified scrubber system installed and running 14

Typical operating modes OPEN LOOP Simple design, few auxiliaries, no chemicals Pure Sea water operation, Continuos discharge at sea CLOSED LOOP No subject to alkalinity/water temperature variation. Zero discharge option HYBRID LOOP Most flexible solution Water treatment before discharge (high flow rate) Combination of open + closed loop design & benefits Utilize sea water alkalinity to control PH. Water treatment before discharge (very low flow rate) Utilize base reagent to control PH.

In line design benefits Slim design, no side quench for flexible in funnel installation NON-ECA mode, exhaust gases can pass through the scrubber without water. High reliability no internal packing to increase L/G contact Low stability impact typically installed at lower height from B.L 16

In line Design configuration SINGLE STREAM MULTI STREAM Less ductwork modifications Optimized for each source Multi funnels configuration Cruise & Ferry High CAPEX No need for 100% MCR design Need isolation valves Single funnel configuration Cargo ships Low CAPEX ONE SOURCE, ONE TOWER MULTI SOURCES, ONE TOWER

MARINE SCRUBBERS TRENDS About 200 confirmed projects for scrubbers (cumulative) Open loop, single stream very popular for Cruise ships Hybrid loop, multi stream popular for Baltic Ferries 18
