2 ILTA CONFERENCE & TRADE SHOW ILTA 32 what does the future hold? The 32nd Annual ILTA International Operating Conference & Trade Show takes place on May in Houston, TX. This year s keynote luncheon speaker is Dan Burrus, technology futurist and business strategist. He has established a worldwide reputation for accurately predicting the future of technological change and its impact on the world of business. He will provide an exclusive perspective on the future of technological change and give specific insights into the opportunities that will be made possible by these changes and what conference attendees can do to capitalise on them. As ever, the ILTA conference has gathered the industry s best speakers to address the latest developments in terminal operations, environmental compliance solutions and business issues. Among the presentations taking place at this year s conference in the Operations/Industry track: Aboveground storage tank cleaning: common mistakes companies make when evaluating contractor bids; Evaluating near-miss events and minimising the risk of major incidents; Static hazards for routine and non-routine operations; Shifting the fire protection discussion from cost to value: reducing the high risks; Vulnerabilities to cyber attacks: are you in control of your terminal system?; Driving operational excellence throughout the organisation; Evaluating marine terminal capabilities: a new international initiative - marine terminal information system The Business Issues track includes: Evaluating the performance of third party terminals; Getting more out personal productivity; Ports, harbours and ship channels; Evolving biodiesel markets; Three fundamental roadblocks to a thriving organisation and how to remove them; Avoiding common mistakes with employment law; Building the business case for safety, quality and environmental excellence In the Environmental, Health, Safety and Security track, topics will cover: the ABCs of vapour control equipment maintenance; Effective measures for meeting terminal security objectives; Defining safety leadership; MTSA regulatory developments and DHS Tools for Mitigating Risk; ILTA Safety Award Winners & roundtable discussion on best safety practices. In addition to the main conference sessions there will as usual be a number of Focused Workshops on specific subjects of interest to the terminal sector. One such on Wednesday 23 May (8am-5pm) looks at Strategies for Resolving Hydrogen Sulphide Issues in Terminals. Many terminals have hydrogen sulphide (H2S) control procedures to ensure safe operations and protect personnel and company assets. Recognising the dangers of H2S and understanding its properties and characteristics will help mitigate the risks of exposure. The workshop will be conducted by Baker Hughes. For full details consult the ILTA website below Trade Show The trade show will open in Exhibit Hall E of the George R Brown Convention Center at 1:30pm on Tuesday 22 May. More than 300 companies will be exhibiting their products and services for the terminal industry. Tuesday evening dinner On Tuesday evening 22 May all conference and trade show attendees and exhibitors are invited to a dinner buffet reception from 6 pm to 9 pm on the second level of the George R Brown. This event, which will include live entertainment, refreshments, appetisers and a dinner buffet, will be a great opportunity to network with others in the industry, meet new acquaintances, and catch up with old friends. All information on the event is available at SUMMER 2012 STORAGE TERMINALS MAGAZINE» 69

4 TECHNOLOGY TECHNOLOGY AND AUTOMATION & SYSTEMS Blackmer launches new multi-purpose LPG pump Blackmer has added of the LGL3021 Multi- Purpose LPG Pump to its line of positive displacement sliding vane LPG pumps. Specifically designed for bulk plant and terminal applications, the LGL3021 is UL- Listed and approved for use on propane, butane, butane/propane mixes and anhydrous ammonia applications. Based on Blackmer s standard LGLD3 transfer pump, the LGL3021 provides the same horsepower requirements and footto-flange and flange-to-flange dimensions as competitive pumps. This allows for easy installation during pump changeovers or plant maintenance without changing piping or motor drives because the inlet and discharge flanges are on the pump shaft centreline. What separates the LGL3021 from competitive pumps is that it provides 13 percent to 25 percent more flow depending on the LPG installation and application conditions, a major consideration during bulk plant and terminal operations, says Blackmer. LGL3021 pumps also feature ductile iron construction with an internal relief valve that protects against excessive pressures, ensuring performance and reliability even under the most severe service conditions. Additional features and benefits include: replaceable casing liners and end discs for easy rebuilding of the pumping chamber; a patented cavitation suppression liner designed for reducing the noise, vibration and wear normally caused by entrained vapours; excellent self-priming and dry-run capabilities; and easy maintenance. LGL3021 pumps are available with differential pressures up to 150 psi (10.35 bar) and maximum pump speeds of 800 rpm. At ILTA (Booth 333), Blackmer will be highlighting a variety of its energy-efficient pumping technologies and environmentally friendly compressors. These include Sliding Vane Pumps designed to handle a variety of liquid storage terminal applications. They are compatible with petroleum products from fuels to asphalt, chemicals, caustics, sulphates and acids, and all types of vegetable and animal oils or fats. Using Blackmer s sliding vane design, these positive displacement rotary pumps are claimed to offer the best combined characteristics of sustained high-level performance, energy efficiency, trouble-free operation and low maintenance cost. Also on display, the HD Series Reciprocating Gas Compressors which provide quiet, efficient transfer of a wide range of liquefied gases. HD Series compressors also have been designed to handle the vapour recovery of gases that are common in terminal applications. The vapour recovery aspect of this application captures vapours before they are released in the environment, allowing terminals to be more environmentally responsible while ensuring the most complete product transfer possible. System One Centrifugal Pumps have been designed with high strength and low maintenance in mind, making them good for extreme operating environments that can be found in terminal operations. In addition, System One pumps have a stiffer heavy-duty shaft and larger bearings resulting in the widest operational window of any standard process pump. Also on the same booth, other divisions of Dover Corporation will be displaying their market offerings. Griswold Pump Company will be highlighting its 811 Series ANSI Centrifugal Pumps, which increase performance and longevity. These pumps use self-tightening impellers that reduce leaks and failures, making them ideal for a broad range of applications in the liquid terminal industry. 5 TECHNOLOGY AND & SYSTEMS AUTOMATION Blackmer s LGL3021 multi-purpose LPG pump The 811 Series features the ability to adjust externally the clearance, ensuring peak efficiency even after wear-loss. Back pump-out vanes reduce pressure on the shaft seal and bearings, while ultra-smooth investment-cast impellers guarantee hydraulic and mechanical balance, as well as maximized seal and bearing life. The 811 Series offers a full range of pump sizes, as well as options and upgrades that can be customized to meet virtually any liquid-terminal application with flow rates up to 1,590 cbm/hr (7,000 gpm). The 811 Series features the availability of both standard and low-flow models, heavy-duty power frames, fully open impellers with rear adjustment capability, and a wide variety of mechanical seal options. The 811 Series pumps are available with ductile iron, 316 stainless steel, CD4MCu and Alloy 20 liquid paths, which make them viable in temperatures as high as 260degsC (500degsF). Each pump is constructed through investment and no-bake casting processes to ensure a smooth, precise, superior finish that guarantees consistent, reliable performance. OPW Engineered Systems will debut its new Liquid Terminals Market Brochure.
