2 ORGANIZATIONS Global Dry Toilet Association of Finland (Käymäläseura Huussi ry) is a non-governmental and a non-profit organization established in 2002 with a vision of making dry toilets an essential part of sustainable development globally. Sari Huuhtanen (Ms), Project Manager Centre for Community Initiatives (CCI) Tanzania is a nongovernmental and a non-profit organization established in 2004 with an aim of helping poor communities to develop the quality of life through sustainable solutions. Dr. Tim Ndezi (Mr), Director CCI supports a network of savings and loaning schemes known as Tanzania Urban Poor Federation with membership of 17,034 in eight regions in Tanzania.

3 THE CRITICAL SANITATION CHALLENGES IN URBAN TANZANIA Inadequate financing mechanisms: Lack of financial institutions offering sanitation loans for inhabitants with low-income living in informal settlements In adequate policy: Individual sanitation are not in the public interest Tenant and landlord relationships: Lack of priority on toilet improvements among landlords, many houses are inherited with lack of toilet improvement obligation

4 THE CRITICAL SANITATION CHALLENGES IN URBAN TANZANIA Few low cost technological options Inadequate skills to construct new sanitation options (technicians and artisans) Presence of high water table in most areas of the City of Dar es salaam Inadequate space to construct facilities inaccessibility within informal settlements for pit emptying

5 IMPLEMENTATION OF DRY TOILET PROJECT IN DAR ES SALAAM The dry toilet project is implemented in each municipality of the City of Dar es Salaam: Ilala, Kinondoni and Temeke, and in one informal settlement of each of them Keko Machungwa (Temeke), Karakata (Ilala) and Tandale (Kinondoni). Phast Ujenzi -team from Keko Machungwa is a leading team (sanitation specialized group) in mobilization and implementation of the project. A team comprises of 27 people of which 17 are women. A total of 15 private and public dry toilets have been constructed to date serving 222 people. It is expected that by the end of the project (2016), a total of 60 dry toilets will be constructed.

12 WHY MULTIPLE STAKEHOLDERS? To bring and share different experiences for effective implementation of the sanitation and social enterprise project. To offer sustainability of the project through capacity building and government engagement for scaling up and supporting the implementation within and outside of the project area. Linking Phast Ujenzi -groups of Keko Machungwa Karakata and Tandale with other development organizations. To offer expertize on different roles played by Phast Ujenzi - groups.

13 ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE PROJECT Addressing the challenge of pit emptying and high water table. Has imparted skills to community to enable them sustainably continue with improving sanitation. Financial mechanism through revolving loan. Entrepreneurial aspect of the project is meaning that technicians are trained to become business enterprises (social enterprises). Enabled involvement of different stakeholders including those who are not in sanitation sector to work together to achieve similar goal.

15 CONCLUSIONS Clarity of roles and responsibilities need to be put in place for a successful and attainments of good results. Landlord and tenants relationship is a hindrance towards achieving sanitation improvement in informal settlements. Dry toilet being a new technology to community members, it needs a lot of mobilization and awareness to both community and local leaders. The project has changed the community perception towards women involvement in construction work that was perceived to be done by men.
