3 Rutgers Green (1988 Present) In order to be good stewards of the environment, we should buy products and services that conserve energy, water and other natural resources. Green : minimizes negative environmental effects through the use of environmentally friendly products, practices and attributes. t is a way of adding environmental considerations to the price and performance criteria that businesses use to make purchasing decisions. attempts to identify and reduce environmental impact as well as maximize resource efficiency. Kevin Lyons, Ph.D., Magda Comeau, Department

4 Why Integrate Green into SCM/ Process? Procurement/Supply Chain Mgt Integration (Best Practice) Develop and sustain both supply and demand for greener goods and services Reduce organization s environmental footprint, liability and risks (e.g. chain of custody issues) Develop standard Statement of Work and Contract Templates for internal/external use. Help meet environmental goals through markets rather than mandates Kevin Lyons, Ph.D., Magda Comeau, Department

5 Change the Mindset Cans Seurat, 2007 (Artist: Chris Jordan) (Inside & Outside Our Campus) Depicts 106,000 aluminum cans, the number used in the US every thirty seconds. Kevin Lyons, Ph.D., Magda Comeau, Department

18 There s Energy in Algae! Dr. Paul Falkowski Enough algae could be grown on just 15,000 square miles of desert to accommodate nearly all of our nation's diesel requirements. Algae are about 50 percent oil and can be grown in places that do not compete with agricultural crops. But, so far there is no economically feasible way to process the oil in algae The challenge is finding ways to harvest the algae to make this a profitable venture.
