Month of Applcaton Ave. Yeld lbs, Seed Per Ac.re for Two Locatons October November December January February (1) Ths treatment was not necessarly the hghest yeldng treatment. These results ndcate a more marked dfference n favor of the early applcaton n the case of Kentucky bluegrass but wth the trend the same n both cases. The seed yeld s heavest for the October applcaton date, a sharp drop n seed yeld for the November applcaton and then an ncrease n December wth the yeld decreasng after December. The wnter hgh yeld applcaton date usually vares by locaton between a December and January peak. Ths early wnter hgh yeld peak has been reported also n the 1960 annual report of the Central Oregon Experment Staton. At that tme, no October applcaton yeld data was avalable. Other data gathered by ths staton ndcates that the seed yeld contnues to declne after February, wth Aprl applcatons contrbutng more to vegetatve growth than seed yelds. Yelds for the four locatons by replcate and mean of four replcatons may be found n Appendx Tables Nos. 1, 2, 3 1 -and 4. In conjuncton wth the fertlty experment above, an exploratory

2 10 experment was conducted to determne the tme of floral nducton n Maron bluegrass as ndcated by the shft of the apcal merstem from a vegetatve stage to floral stage. It was also hoped that some nformaton mght be ganed on the effect of phosphate, potash and sulfur applcatons, and the tme of ntrogen applcaton on floral nducton. The Meron bluegrass locatons were checked throughout the wnter and early sprng. It was not untl March 14, 1962, that the frst prmorda shfted from vegetatve to floral form,, The floral development appeared to be further advanced at the Madras locaton than at the Culver locaton. The reason for the more advanced state s not defntely known, but probably sol temperature s an mportant factor. The Madras locaton s from feet lower n elevaton and n a generally warmer regon than the Culver area. At ths tme t was necessary to select only one locaton for further study and. the Madras locaton was selected, By March 19, 1962, the shft was well under way at the Madras locaton but only n the prmary bud. The results obtaned are shown rk Table 5. Snce the results of ths table are smlar to, but more clearly shown n the March 31 readng, (Table No. 6 ), only the March 31 readngs wll receve comment. The results tend to ndcate that at least a porton of the yeld dfferences obtaned are already manfest n the plant by the end of March. The treatment wth no fertlzer was consderably slower n floral nducton, the February applcaton s next n lne. The absence of phosphate, potash and sulfur for a complete fertlzer may also tend to slow floral nducton. By March 31, all of the prmary buds of the October and January treatments had started or completed floral nducton wth the January applcaton most effectve at least n the prmary bud. Recorded observatons at the tme of readng the floral development ndcate that when no fertlzer was appled, two apparently dstnct types of plants developed. One type conssted of rather thrfty plants wth a strong prmary and one or two strong lateral tllers. Ths type of plant showed no dead growth from the prevous year and was apparently a new seedlng. The second type plant was a mass of small and poorly developed tllers almost 100% vegetatve and showed the dead stem growth of the prevous year, The plants wthout phosphate had large numbers of small, spndly and brttle laterals. The absence of potash and sulfur treatments apparently had lttle to do wth the condton of the tllers. These plants were thrfty and had good lateral development. The October ntrogen treatment produced a large number of healthy laterals and n many

Those plants assocated wth last years growth were very much ntrogen starved and appeared to have vegetatve prmora wthout excepton. Those plants whch appeared to be last years new seedlngs and not assocated wth last years producton were qute well developed and dd not appear ntrogen defcent.

Ths nformaton s of lmted accuracy because of the necessarly small number of readngs taken and ndvdual plants examned but t does offer enough to justfy a more thorough experment n the future.
