UNIDO-ICHET is an autonomous technological institution within the auspices of UNIDO, located in Istanbul, Turkey Istanbul bridge between Europe and Asia (West and East) Turkey bridge between industrialised and developing countries UNIDO-ICHET bridge between fossil fuel past and hydrogen future

UNIDO-ICHET Background UNIDO-ICHET is located in Istanbul, Turkey Formed in 2003 trust fund agreement between UNIDO and Turkish Government (Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources) Started operation in 2004 Budget $40M over 5 years Currently, staff of about 20

UNIDO-ICHET Organisation

UNIDO-ICHET Mission The International Centre for Hydrogen Energy Technologies is a UNIDO project with the mission of demonstrating viable implementations of hydrogen energy technologies and facilitating their widespread use in developing countries. By stimulating appropriate applications, ICHET will thus act as a bridge to help span the gaps that exist between the developed and developing countries in the areas of both hydrogen research and development efforts, and energy supply and demand.

Main strategy of ICHET Promote Hydrogen Energy Activities at National and International Platforms by: Raising funding for hydrogen energy projects; Searching and identifying committed project partners; Financing projects with industrial partners; Establishing applied R & D facilities addressing the bottlenecks of hydrogen in developing world; Calling for proposals and setting project goals; Organising meetings; Training and educating people at various levels; Conducting applied R&D; Disseminating information through publications and web site.

UNIDO-ICHET Programmes National (Turkish) Projects International Projects Research & Development Campus Project Hydrogen Database Conferences & Workshops Educational Activities Consulting Services Promotional Activities

NATIONAL PROJECTS ICHET staff have been active in canvassing representatives of Turkish industry at conferences, seminars and meetings. - a number of Turkish companies have been attracted by the benefits to be gained by exploiting hydrogen energy. - a number have joined together with ICHET and formed consortia to undertake the necessary development work. These projects can be considered in two groups: 1) project funding has been sought by ICHET from external organisations such as UNDP, TUBITAK, etc; 2) projects will be funded by the consortia members with partial funding by ICHET.

EXTERNALLY FUNDED ACTIVITIES I Biomass Hydrogen Production SUMMARY: Hydrogen will be produced from sweet sorghum and sugar beet crops through mechanical, biological and thermochemical processes. Consortium Partners: UNIDO- ICHET, Pankobirlik, Erikoğlu Holding, Sanko Holding. H 2

EXTERNALLY FUNDED ACTIVITIES - II Sedef Island Wind-Solar Solar-Hydrogen Summary: Establishment of a wind-solar-hybrid energy system to meet all energy demands of approximately 130 households living on Sedef Island, Turkey. Solar-Wind Hybrid System Electrolyzer Unit Consortium Partners: ICHET, Istanbul Energy A.S, GAMA Holding, IGDAS, Enisolar, Noksel, Sedef Island Protection Society and Arcelik A.S

EXTERNALLY FUNDED ACTIVITIES - III Kocaeli Municipality Bus SUMMARY: This project aims to develop and operate 2 buses that use hydrogen as fuel for transportation in Izmit area. The buses will use specially adapted internal combustion engines. Consortium Partners: UNIDO-ICHET, Izmit Municipality, TEMSA Bus Co., BOS

ACTIVITIES PARTIALLY FUNDED BY ICHET - I Sea Taxi SUMMARY: two internal combustion engines running on hydrogen and having a power of 245 HP will be integrated into the sea taxis. In the next stages of the project, PV panels will be fitted on top of the sea taxi through which electricity will be produced. Hydrogen will be produced via an electrolyser. Consortium Partners: ICHET, Labranda Marine and Composite Materials Manufacture and Trade, Okted A.Ş., BOS, Technology Holding. Engines &H2 Storage

ACTIVITIES PARTIALLY FUNDED BY ICHET - II Fuel Cell Powered Forklift SUMMARY: to realise the utilisation of fuel cells of 5 kw power in forklifts. A prototype will be developed around an appropriate fuel cell. Hydrogen will be supplied by electrolysis of water. Consortium Partners: ICHET, Çukurova Holding, BOS A.S. H 2

ACTIVITIES PARTIALLY FUNDED BY ICHET - III Hydrogen Fuelled Small Vehicles Summary: The project is an implementation project for designing two vehicles. One is powered by fuel cell-battery hybrid power train and the other is a race car. They will be the first urban type hydrogen powered cars in Turkey. In the first stage of the project, a single seater hydrogen fuelled car will be designed having a 1.2 kw fuel cell. In the second stage two seater hybrid car having two 1.2 kw fuel cells working in series with the batteries will be designed for long range operation. Consortium Partners: ICHET, Bogazici Univ. Shell, Linde Gas, 3M,.

ACTIVITIES PARTIALLY FUNDED BY ICHET - IV Hospital Oxygen-Hydrogen SUMMARY: Off peak electricity will be utilized to produce hydrogen and oxygen. Both gases will be used in a hospital and hydrogen will also be used as a fuel for an ambulance with an ICE engine. Consortium Partners: ICHET, Saglık ve Sosyal Yardim Vakfi, Karbogaz Co., Sanko Holding Electrolysis Unit H 2 O 2 Off-peak Electricity H 2 Hospital O 2

Newly Initiated National Projects I Hydrogen Production From Coal Summary: The project is aiming to produce cheap hydrogen by using clean coal technology. Consortium partners: UNIDO-ICHET, Çukurova Univ., Final Energy Ltd..

Newly Initiated National Projects II Development of PVC Pipes for Hydrogen Transport Summary: PVC type pipes will be most economic way of transporting hydrogen. Design Group Company has already started to develop pipes with High Density Polymer material for carrying gaseous hydrogen. Consortium partners: UNIDO-ICHET, Design Group.
