3 HOW BIOMASS WORKS... Biomass is organic matter. The CO 2 released when energy is generated from biomass is balanced by that absorbed during the fuel s production. This is why it is considered to be a carbon neutral process. Wood fuelled heating systems generally burn wood pellets, chips or logs to power central heating and hot water boilers. Doing so in an encloser, in which the airflow is restricted, will be far more efficient than burning it in the open. This encloser can be used to provide heat for the room it stands in or by heating water and pumping it through pipes, it can provide heat to several rooms, and/or for hot water. EXAMPLE OF A BIOMASS SYSTEM THE BENEFITS OF BIOMASS Clean Energy - Biomass energy, for the most part, creates no harmful carbon dioxide emissions. Abundant & Renewable Since the fuel product comes from living sources these products potentially never run out, so long as there is something living on earth and there is someone there to turn that living things components and waste products into energy. Government Renewable Heat Incentive Scheme RENEWABLE HEAT INCENTIVE (RHI) What is the RHI scheme? The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is a financial incentive scheme designed to increase the uptake of renewable heat technologies and reduce the UK s carbon emissions. It provides a subsidy per kwh of eligible renewable heat generated from accredited installations such as biomass boilers. The scheme entitles you to support for 20 years for commercial installations and 7 years for domestic installations. 3

5 CN MASKINFABRIK 15KW - 120KW The boilers in this CN series, manufactured in Denmark, are three-draught boilers constructed according to the latest principles for boiler design with solid fuel and stoker feed. The boilers are robustly built and well insulated, and all parts that come into contact with flue gas are made of corrosion resistant steel. The boilers can be supplied with a fuel input pipe for automatic feed and doors on the right or left side. The log boilers are available from 15KW to 120KW with the option of an additional stoking unit which enables the automatic feed of woodchip and pellets. The parts are dimensioned to give the best possible use of the material fed in. The combustion chamber is circular which provides the best heat absorption and collects the ash as much as possible. 6 BIOMASS LINDNER SOMMERAUR CHIP & PELLET BIOMASS BOILERS The SL Series range of multi-fuel biomass boilers deliver a combination of high heat output, optimum combustion, usability and easy maintenance. Heat outputs are available from 30 to 250kW with a single boiler system. They offer some of the highest heating efficiencies available with combustion air controlled by a suction fan and short heating times due to rapid heat transfer through the steel heat exchanger. A patented burner system and contra rotating grate drives high heating efficiencies and prevents the build-up of clinker. 7 SHT DOMESTIC BIOMASS BOILERS SHT from Salzburg, Austria are an innovative manufacturer in the development and marketing of environmentally friendly heating systems, specialising in both dual fuel systems that can burn pellets and logs and pellet only systems. 8 HDG CENTRAL HEATING BOILERS Specially Clean The advanced combustion technology of HDG pellet biomass boilers are perfectly designed to burn pellets as a fuel, resulting in very low emission values. Extremely high efficiency levels are also achieved through the combustion of this environmentally friendly fuel. 9 ACCUMULATOR TANKS Mainly used as the main heat storage medium for biomass boiler systems, accumulator tanks help boiler installations to efficiently store large volumes of primary heating water. Typically, accumulator tanks can store heating water for long periods due to there thermal efficiency and layering properties. When used in conjunction with effective mixing and loading valves, they can help to get the best use out of your biomass boiler. 9

17 GROUND/AIR SOURCE HEATING WHAT IS A GROUND SOURCE HEAT PUMP? A ground source heat pump uses the natural energy stored in the earth to heat your premises. Just a few metres under the ground there is a constant temperature of 12 Degrees which can be extracted from the pipes of the ground source heat pump which are buried underground. This heat can then be used to heat radiators or underfloor heating systems and hot water. A ground source heat pump circulates a mixture of water and anti-freeze around a loop of pipe which is buried. Heat from the ground is absorbed into the fluid and then passes through a heat exchanger into the heat pump. If you have a limited amount of space, a vertical borehole can be drilled instead. Vertical system- Occupies less space and is larger in length, buried deep into the ground. Horizontal system- They occupy more space in width than the vertical systems but are not buried so deep into the ground. These are the most cost effective ground source heat pumps. Pond or lake system- This system has a water source near its installation. The underground pipes run from the building to the water body. 17

18 WHAT IS AN AIR SOURCE HEAT PUMP? Air source heat pumps (ASHP) absorb heat from the outside air which can then be used to heat radiators, underfloor heating systems and hot water. ASHP s can operate in temperatures as low as -15 C allowing them to provide heat to your home all year round. Air-Source heat pumps have some impact on the environment as they need electricity to run, but the heat they extract from the air is constantly being renewed naturally. An effective method of bypassing the environmental impact of ASHP s is to power them with solar panels, allowing for a fully renewably powered heating system. There are two main types of ASHP: Air-to-water systems extract heat from the outside air and transfer it into a central heating system. Air-to-air systems extract heat from the outside air and feed it into the premises through fans. Air to air systems cannot heat hot water but in the summer they can be operated in reverse, providing cool air for your home. 18
