CLEANLINESS Cleanliness is imprtant t the well being f Singapreans. By uphlding the cleanliness f Singapre, we are able t prevent pest infestatin and ward ff the spread f diseases such as Dengue. Everyne has a part t play in uphlding the cleanliness f ur natin. We can each play a part by reminding ur friends and family t dispse f their litter prperly.

WHAT CAN WE DO TO UPHOLD CLEANLINESS? Organise litter picking activities in yur neighburhd. Make yur schl a bright spt, by cnducting cleaning activities t clean classrms, canteens and crridrs. Cleanest classrm cmpetitins. Putting up psters at areas such as tilets and canteen. Setting up f bths fr residents t pledge their cmmitment t uphld cleanliness.

DENGUE The Aedes msquit transmits viral diseases such as Dengue Fever, Zika and Chikungunya. They are spread thrugh the bite f the female Aedes msquit. T prevent yurself frm cntracting these diseases, yu must take preventive measures. These include: Remving stagnant water in yur hme. Applying insect repellent and wearing lng-sleeved shirts and pants.

DENGUE Msquites becme infected when they bite an infected persn. Thrugh this they becme carriers and can spread the virus t ther peple thrugh their bites. Only female msquites drink bld t mature their eggs, male msquites drink plant juices. The peak perids in which Aedes msquites bite individuals is during daytime.

DENGUE The symptms f Dengue are high fever, severe headache, muscle and jint pains, rashes, nausea and vmiting. The incubatin perid fr Dengue in the human bdy is 4-7 days. After which the individual wuld start experiencing the symptms. There are fur different sertypes r variants f the disease. Infectin with ne variant nly prvides subsequent prtectin frm that variant. Yu are still vulnerable t ther variants. Subsequent infectin can result in the risk f cntracting a severe frm f dengue.

DENGUE What is Dengue haemrrhagic fever? Dengue haemrrhagic fever is a severe frm f Dengue fever. It can cause bleeding frm the nse, muth and gums. In its mild frm, 90-95% f individuals wuld be able t recver frm it. Severe cases culd even lead t death. What is Zika? It is a viral infectin similar t Dengue and the symptms are usually mild, therefre peple may nt realise that they have been infected.

DENGUE Hw d we stp the spread f Dengue and Zika? By preventing the breeding f Aedes msquites. Hw d we g abut ding that? By clearing stagnant water frm ur hmes. Yu may ask, what des clearing f stagnant water have t d with msquit breeding? Msquites lay eggs in stagnant water and the eggs wuld nly need abut 1 week in ptimal cnditins t becme a full grwn msquit. Aedes msquites usually rest near their feeding sites, hence we shuld take measures t get rid f them indrs.

DENGUE Aedes msquit eggs can last fr mre than 9 mnths in dry cnditins. A msquit can lay eggs abut 3 times in its lifetime and rughly abut a 100 eggs each time. They nly need a puddle f water rughly the size f a twenty cent cin t breed! Imagine hw many eggs there wuld be in the stagnant water left in yur vase! This is why we have t clear stagnant water in ur hmes t prevent the msquites frm laying their eggs in the stagnant water.

TRAY RETURN Tray return is an act f scial graciusness, that helps t reduce waiting time and prmtes a clean dining envirnment. It is als an act that signifies cnsideratin fr thers.

3RS The 3Rs are Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. We practise the 3Rs t prtect the envirnment, cnserve limited resurces and reduce the space needed fr waste dispsal facilities. Reduce: use nly what yu need. Reuse: reuse things fr the same r new purpse. Recycle: cnvert waste int useful prducts.

REDUCE Hw can we g abut practising the 3Rs? Reduce: Avid using dispsable items. Minimise fd wastage by taking nly what yu can finish. Buy nly what yu need. Bring yur wn bag fr shpping.

REUSE Dnate unwanted r ld stry bks. Reuse plastic cntainers. Reuse plastic bags t line bins. Purchase refill packs whenever pssible. Use refillable statinery. Write n bth sides f the paper.

RECYCLE Recycle paper, plastic, metal and glass. Eg. Glass jars, cereal bxes, newspapers, plastic bttles, plastic bags, drink cans and milk tins. It is imprtant t empty recyclable cntainers f their cntent. Rinse them if necessary. Depsit recyclables in the blue bins prvided under the Natinal Recycling Prgramme.

RECYCLE D nt place the fllwing items int recycling bins: Fd waste, liquid waste Prcelain, ceramic Tissue paper Styrfam Recyclable items siled with fd Pizza Bxes Dispsable batteries Ckware (Pyrex) Light bulbs and lamps Pillws, blsters Cmpsite materials Pens, empty bags f chips Shes

NATIONAL RECYCLING PROGRAMME There is ne recycling bin fr each HDB blck and they are cleared three times a week. There is als ne recycling bin prvided fr each landed huse and they are cleared nce a week. Infrmatin n acceptable and unacceptable items can be fund n the bin.

YOUR OWN RECYCLING PROGRAMME Yu can start yur wn recycling prgramme at hme. First, begin by segregating recyclables and refuse int separate bins. Empty the recyclable cntainers f their cntent. Rinse them if necessary. Put yur recyclables int the blue recycling bin/recycling chute at yur blck.

WHAT HAPPENS TO RECYCLABLES? The recyclables are cllected by a recycling truck and sent t a Material Recvery Facility (MRF). At the MRF, the recyclables are srted ut int paper, glass, metal and plastic. After srting, each type f waste is packed int a bundle. The bundles are then sent t recycling plants fr recycling.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY Energy efficiency is an energy cnservatin measure that is practical and cst effective. It helps t reduce carbn dixide emissins while sustaining ecnmic develpment. Singapre is vulnerable t rising energy csts due t the inavailability f natural resurces. Therefre we must take measures t becme mre energy efficient.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY Singapre has n natural surce f cal, il r gas. It has limited capacity fr hydrpwer and gethermal energy as well. The wind speeds in Singapre are t lw t tap wind energy n a large scale. While slar energy des appear t have ptential, it might nt be able t fulfil Singapre's energy utput. This is why energy efficiency is very imprtant!

ENERGY EFFICIENCY 15% f the ttal electricity generated is cnsumed by husehlds. This is due t the increase in the wnership f hme electrical appliances. This has led t an increasing dependency n appliances such as air cnditiners, as well as an increased usage f technlgy such as mbile devices. What can we d t increase ur energy efficiency?

ENERGY EFFICIENCY First, understand the electricity cnsumptin at hme. Find ut which electrical appliances cnsume the mst energy. The appliances that cmmnly cnsume a lt f energy are: air cnditiners, water heaters and refrigeratrs. Als check yur mnthly electricity bill t verify yur husehld energy cnsumptin. Ensure that yur husehld cnsumptin falls belw the natinal average.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY Next, use energy efficient appliances. Hw d we identify energy efficient appliances? By checking the energy efficiency label n the appliances. The mre ticks n the label, the mre efficient the appliance is. Learn t use the appliances efficiently. Use the fan instead f the air cnditiner. If yu d use the air cnditiner, d nt let it run fr a lng time; switch t the fan after a shrt while. Switch ff appliances at the pwer scket. Make use f natural light and blinds during the httest part f the day. Utilise energy efficient lighting. Install instantaneus heater instead f the strage heater.
