13 Example: Ditches Need Cleaning If the ditch is on: Your Property Neighbor s (Private) Property Pierce County Property Possible actions are: Contact Pierce County, WDFW, and other applicable agencies for permits Clean and maintain ditch Contact neighbor about the problem If you believe it is a violation, contact Pierce County Responds or online Call or submit online to County Request for Action Hotline Other Public Property Contact owner If in Drainage District call Commissioners or other staff 13

18 Agency Agency Roles by Issue: Infrastructure (or lack of) Pierce County Surface Water Management Role Responsible if the problem is located on infrastructure maintained by SWM (SWM manages approximately 30+ off right-of way ditch systems) Pierce County Roads Responsible if the problem is located on infrastructure maintained by PC Roads and is affecting roadway safety or functioning NOTE: Roadside ditches and culverts are created/sized and maintained to drain roadways, not to provide private property drainage Pierce County Planning and Land Services Permits may be required depending on maintenance or improvement needs Contact the PALS Development Center There are agricultural exemptions for many drainage maintenance activities Drainage Districts Responsible if problem is located on infrastructure maintained by Drainage District Improvements may require additional taxing of those in the Drainage District Washington Dept. of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) PC Conservation District Permits may be required depending on maintenance or improvement needs Help with ditch maintenance and improvement Soil practices and drainage tiles Farm Planning and Agricultural Assistance 18

19 Agency Agency Roles by Issue: Beavers Pierce County Surface Water Management Role Responsible if the beaver problem is located on SWM property and is causing problems on neighboring properties Pierce County Roads Responsible if the beaver problem is located on PC Roads property or ROW and is causing problems on neighboring properties Drainage Districts Responsible if the beaver problem is located on Drainage District maintained property or ditches Washington Dept. of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) Website and staff can provide information about possible solutions and future prevention 19
