2 A-3 Information about the project A3.1 Short description of the environmental problem Wastewater from the City of Skopje (~ 460,000 population) are currently discharged into the Vardar River without any treatment thus rendering the water downstream unsuitable for potable water use and for agriculture use. Affected cities: Veles, Demir Kapija and Gevgelija and several villages along the River Vardar. Pollution of the Thesalloniki Bay (Greece) is a crossborder problem. A3.2 Origins and positive environmental impact of the project A3.2.1 Description of factors that inspired the project (driving forces) To protect the River Vardar and water from the ground sources from pollution. Environmental pollution poses a threat to the population from the perspective of: - food production - health - natural biodiversity. Compliance with EU "Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive". A3.2.2 Project main goal and objectives A3.2.3 expected positive environmental effects A3.2.4 Health impact of the project Protection of water in the rivers and of the land and improved quality of life for citizens in the City of Skopje and the surrounding region. 1) Improved quality of water in River Vardar, resulting in cleaner water for irrigation purposes yielding healthier agricultural products. 2) Protection of the water for the region and cross-border areas. 3) Restore biodiversity of the rivers effected. The quality of the water in the wells in Veles, Demir Kapija and Gevgelija shall be improved, thus protecting the health of the consumers. A3.2.5 Size of population benefiting from the project implementation A3.2.6 Scale of impact citizens in Skopje citizens downstream of the Vardar River (in Macedonia and in northern Greece).
