Nuclear power corporation of India limited (NPCIL) organized the visit of Executive members of Public Relation Society of India (PRSI) Mumbai Chapter to Tarapur Atomic Power Station (TAPS) -3&4 under Public Awareness Programme to make them understand and aware about the operations and functioning of nuclear power plant & about the numerous aspects of nuclear energy. During the visit to Information Centre, where various interactive models, depicting working of NPPs, fuel and the structure of reactor core were demonstrated to the delegates and detailed briefing on Tarapur Atomic Power Station and its operations were given by senior officials of TAPS-3&4. The briefing covered various safety aspects of the nuclear power plants (NPPs) keeping in mind the AERB guidelines, their emergency preparedness and the benefits of nuclear power. They were also told that radiation level is periodically measured in the surrounding areas of TMS by the Environment Survey Laboratory (ESL) and briefed about the functioning and role of environment monitoring mechanism towards nuclear safety. Health monitoring of workers and local peoples are done by measuring the doses of radiations on regular intervals. They were also communicated about the radioactive waste management facility and about the various types of radioactive waste. It was also highlighted that radiation received from NPPs, by the people residing in the vicinity, is insignificant in comparison to the natural background radiation. After that group made a visit inside the Control Room and Turbine Hall where they were briefed about the entire process of electricity generation. Before starting the visit, members raised many questions about the radiation, congenital deformity, safety of Indian nuclear power plants, effects of earthquake and tsunami in the wake of the nuclear disaster happened at Fukushima, which were answered with authentic facts and logical approach by Shri. Hemant Kumar, Site Director, Tarapur Maharashtra Site. अम त श श र व स तव वररष ठ प रब क (म ब य / स स )

The world has today more than 450 nuclear plants generating electricity. Their experience is being continuously researched, and feedback should be provided to all. Nuclear scientist should continuously interact with people of the nation, educational institutions and continuously update nuclear power generation technology and safety." These very words said by Dr A P J Abdul Kalam sums up my views about my visit to Tarapur NPC unit on 3rd February I am sure, moving along with the vision of Dr Kalam & Dr. Bhabha, India would one day march ahead in generating sufficient electricity with the help of Nuclear power and every corner of the country would proverbially light up to erase darkness. Thank you NPCIL and Team Tarapur Nuclear Power Plant for providing such excellent opportunity to PRSI Mumbai Chapter. This will always be a memorable moment for all of us. Sushanta Dhar Mr. Sushant Dhar Vice Chairman, PRSI Mumbai Chapter

Thank you so much for giving me the life time opportunity of not only visiting a Nuclear Power Plant but also helping me get rid of many myths that had been harbouring around about safety and need of Atomic Energy amongst my family, friends and the society in general. Let me firstly thanks NPCIL for warmth and hospitality from you and your other colleagues chiefly Mr Hemant Kumar and many others, who simplified the whole plant operations detailing. Secondly the presentation and tour inside the plant was carried out very swiftly, smoothly and in a very friendly manner. All explanations and detail came without any jargons and complex scientific terms. This helped us understand things better. It was amazing to see that such highly qualified people were so dedicated to this cause and operation. IF THOSE WHO KNOW ALL ABOUT ATOMIC ENERGY CAN FEEL SO SAFE FOR SELF AND THEIR FAMILY THERE IS NO REASON WHY REST OF INDIA CAN T. It impressed us all immensely that such high technology plants are now fully indigenous. NPCIL is indeed pride of India!! Mr. Vikesh Wallia Jury & Executive Member, PRSI Mumbai Chapter Let me tell you that the visit certainly makes me an ambassador about safety and advantages of Atomic Energy. Here is wishing you and team NPCIL greater success ahead! Thanking you once again and with my best personal regards, Vikesh Wallia

Mr. Madan Mohan Execuitive Member & Treasurer PRSI Mumbai Chapter A team of senior professionals from Public Relation fraternity, Mumbai visited Tarapur Atomic Energy plant on 3rd of February, 2018 under your guidance. Team met the Site director Mr. Hement Kumar and he briefed about the plant. Most importantly, he patiently answered all the queries and doubts regarding Nuclear energy such as any harmful effect of radiation on human body. Tarapur Atomic Energy plant was commercially started its operation in 1969 and thousands of people have been working there since then and not a single case of radiation exposure has been reported so far. After meeting the director, we went to see the plant. We visited control room and were briefed, how the fuel is loaded in the plant and how the plant is operated and controlled. It is a automatic plant and can shut in fraction of time in case of emergency. It is supervised day and night and well maintained. After having lunch, we had a round of the plant. All of us were very much convinced that the myths and rumours are spread by vested groups for the nuclear energy, are false and India needs this clean energy so that our nation can progress fast. Team thanked Mr Amritesh Srivastava for such a wonderful and life time experience and great hospitality. Thanks & With regards - Madan Mohan

At the outset thanks a lot for organising the visit. It was not only enlightening but also made memorable with the hospitality that we received. The session with the Site Director was very enlightening. He not only answered all our queries very patiently but also made us understand very complex scientific concepts in a very lucid manner, in a layman's language. Extremely grateful to him for sparing his time. It was all the more interesting as he spoke mostly in Hindi on a purely scientific subject. The visit to different facilities in the Power station aroused our curiosity as a student in understanding the various scientific processes. India's use of atomic energy for peaceful purposes is internationally acclaimed and the visit made us realise the potential of our country in using atomic energy for power generation. It also helped us as a common citizen, to quell the doubts or the misunderstanding relating to the use of atomic energy. The safety measures put in place, definitely added confidence to allay the apprehensions of the common man relating to use of atomic energy. Mr. N Hariharan Execuitive Member, PRSI Mumbai Chapter Overall it was a very enlightening visit. Thanks once again for the visit. - N Hariharan

Mrs. Sabeeta Badkar Executive Member, PRSI Mumbai Chapter At the outset, I would like to thank Shri Amritesh Srivastava, NPCIL for having so meticulously arranged the one day visit to the Nuclear Power Plant at Tarapur on February 3, Prior to setting out on the trip, I was a little apprehensive with various thoughts crossing my mind, such as, whether I was putting myself in a dangerous situation by exposing myself to harmful radiation, toxic chemicals, etc., released by the power plant. My fears were, however, put to rest by the various officials who interacted with us and explained the various processes taking place in the plant in a simple layman s language and also unravelled various mysteries pertaining to nuclear power. I would especially like to thank the Site Director, Shri Hemant Kumar for having spared time from his busy schedule and having interacted with us in a very congenial manner. Shri Hemant Kumar helped in clearing the various myths we had in our minds pertaining to exposure to radiation, nuclear reactors being unsafe, disposal of nuclear waste, etc. He also enlightened us with the information that NPCIL has embarked on a project of creating the right kind of awareness in the mind of the common man and also dispelling unnecessary fears. One important thing which struck me was the extreme safety standards put in place for the protection of the employees working in the reactor. I would once again like to thank everyone associated with our visit to Tarapur power plant for the generous hospitality extended to us. - Sabeeta Badkar
