Talent pipeline Education is not actively involved to create new talent in this field Positive examples: Excursions to Water lab and Water lab trips to secondary schools (~ 15 in last 4 years) Rīgas Tehniskā universitāte 8

Talent pipeline In the end of 2018 Water lab will visit: 6 secondary schools with financial support from Latvian water and wastewater works association - LWWWWA (united 29 municipal water services utilities and 12 private companies) 6 secondary schools with own expenses In 2018 MoU for cooperation between RTU and Mechanics and Technology College of Olaine (MTCO, VET school, specialisation - chemistry, pharmacy, biotechnology, environment and food sector) Possible cooperation with with 5 additional VET schools, examples: Rīgas Tehniskā universitāte 9

Talent pipeline In 2015 RTU developed Engineering High School where are realized STEM education (priority is for kids which were prize winners in Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry Olympiads) Rīgas Tehniskā universitāte 12

Summary about Talent pipeline on example of Wetsus Rīgas Tehniskā universitāte 13

Challenges Demographic changes reducing number of inhabitants/ local students and ageing Unemployment level in mid of % The brain drain, emigration of highly educated workers to the rest of the EU Education funding is covered from public funding (low investment per student in higher education) Low R&D investment (including public funding) Lack of coordination and interaction between research and business sector - different goals, lack of information about each other The business model of companies: distributors of technologies instead of producers of technologies. Lack of free resources for entrepreneurs to provide R & D activities In order Rīgas to Tehniskā be able universitāte to use the latest technologies, create new products and cooperate effectively with research organizations, Goals Attraction of foreign students Development of young talent pipeline Development of lifelong learning course for stakeholders Development of carreer path for students of RTU Engineering High School in cooperation with Wetsus In addition more funding should be from private sources (industry/companies) Development of R&D department in cluster Development of entrepreneurship/ business infrastructure for attracting investors Establishment of Knowledge Triangle Demo project between university and cluster in one master thesis work excesussion where topic19defined by company
