19 The analysis of DBs of the State environmental monitoring of rivers, Operators' environmental monitoring, other performed scientific studies/projects, as well as the results of chemical analysis of water samples gathered during the expeditions revealed that in the rivers of Venta RBD there is no pollution by priority/hazardous substances. Whereas the problem of river water pollution by nutrients (total nitrogen and total phosphorus) was identified. The Discharge Test was calibrated and applied for the calculations of mixing zones in LT rivers of the Venta RBD. The modelling of the mixing zones was performed using worst-case approach (low flow conditions) for the real pollutant concentration measured during the expeditions. The further modelling was performed in order to find out what is a concentration limit of polluting substance in the effluent discharge for particular river mixing zone (in worst-case conditions).

20 The Discharge Test application and mixing zone designation is more important in cases of discharged effluents to the smaller rivers (the cases of the Agluona and the Dabikinė rivers), whereas in the larger rivers (the cases of the Venta and the Bartuva) the pollutant mixing process is more rapid and needs smaller mixing zone (according to EQS criteria) for dilution with receiving river water. The mixing zone approach using the Discharge Test could be useful to be applied in the rest of Lithuanian River Basin Districts, where more significant pollution by priority/hazardous substances is observed.
