Societal Challenge 5: Climate Action, Environment, Resource Efficiency and Raw Materials - Work Programme multiannual calls: Focus: moving to a greener, more resource efficient and climate-resilient economy in sync with the natural environment demonstrating a strong commitment to supporting the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the targets of the COP21 Paris Agreement "Building a low-carbon, climate resilient future: climate action in support of the Paris Agreement" "Greening the economy in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)" Total indicative budget bn, of which m for topics open: 14 November 2018 Next call deadline: 19 February 2019

Call "Building a low-carbon, climate resilient future: climate action in support of the Paris Agreement" Decarbonisation Climate adaptation, impacts and services Inter-relations between climate change, biodiversity and ecosystem services The Cryosphere Knowledge gaps [in 2020] Earth observation [in 2020] Budget in 2019: 116 million

Call "Greening the economy in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)" Connecting economic and environmental gains - the circular economy Raw materials Water for our environment, economy and society Innovating cities for sustainability and resilience Protecting and leveraging the value of our natural and cultural assets: Earth observation; nature-based solutions, disaster risk reduction and natural capital accounting; heritage alive Budget in 2019: million

Societal Challenge 5 in practice Budget of 3 billion over 7 years ( ) Budget of 1,06 billion for the years What kind of projects are we looking for? Research and Innovation Actions - new knowledge Innovation Actions new technologies and new solutions Coordination and Support Actions Average budget per grant M Average number of partners 19 Average duration 41 months

What are our core activities? The whole Project life-cycle More than 1000 proposals to be evaluated yearly GAP - 24 projects in GAP ongoing Project monitoring currently 220 projects Policy feedback Cooperation with parent DG's RTD and GROW Input to Work Programme Clustering projects Evaluation Grant Agreement Preparation Policy feedback Project monitoring

What projects are we financing? Currently we are monitoring 220 projects: - 70 on Eco-Innovation: Waste, Water, Circular Economy - 57 on Climate Action, Earth Observation, Arctic Dimension - 34 on Natural Resources, Nature Based Solutions, Blue Growth, Cultural Heritage - 58 on Raw Materials and SILC II

Societal Challenge 5 Projects Eco-Innovation Water - imetland IA - 3M 11 partners 36 months WHAT? Electroactive" bacteria purifying water IDEA: a new, environmentally friendly way to purify sewage water HOW? The water is purified the natural way, by underground microorganisms that produce electricity and break down organic waste with innovative constructed wetland RESULT: clean water, with zero energy cost and no residual pollution Copyrights by imetland

Societal Challenge 5 Projects Circular Economy - FORCE IA - 9,7M 24 partners 48 months Copyrights by FORCE Demos: Copenhagen: mixed plastic waste Genoa: wood waste Hamburg: WEEE Lisbon: food The four cities involved in the project, Copenhagen, Hamburg, Lisbon and Genoa, will engage enterprises, citizens and academia in 16 participatory value chain based partnerships to create and develop ecoinnovative solutions. 16

Societal Challenge 5 Projects NATURAL RESOURCES SponGES RIA - 10M 20 partners 48 months Sponges have been living in the oceans for half a billion years Nevertheless we know almost nothing of those living in the deep seas SponGES project is studying the deep sea sponges: Strengthening the knowledge about the deep sea sponge ecosystems of the North Atlantic. How to preserve and sustainably use deep sea sponge? What role they could play in recycling ocean's waste? Copyrights by SponGES What is the biotechnological and medical potential of these ecosystems?

Societal Challenge 5 Projects EARTH OBSERVATION ECOPOTENTIAL RIA - 15M 49 partners 48 months One Lithuanian partner - KLAIPEDOS UNIVERSITETAS - and one Lithuanian Protected Area Curonian Lagoon Focus on a network of internationally recognized Protected Areas (23) in Europe and beyond, as well as of their Park Managers Use data from the Copernicus programme & existing in-situ data and identify data gaps Build Earth Observation (EO) data products to characterize ecosystems state and changes Build models capable of assimilating EO and in-situ data, capable to include uncertainty estimates Identify relevant ecosystem services & estimate the future state of ecosystems Contribution to the GEO Ecosystem Community of Practice Copyrights by Tomas Ruginis

Societal Challenge 5 Projects RAW Materials VAMOS IA - 9,2M - 19 partners 42 months Breakthrough solution: the underwater mining machine the innovative slurry transportation system Copyrights by VAMOS The mining system will also minimise all associated environmental impacts. This new extraction system will be possibly used in all submerged hard-rock environments.
