1 Strategic Plan Fourche Creek Watershed HUA #: er Arkansas-Maumelle Date Adopted: January 2002 Watershed Location Map

2 Background Information 1. Water quality impairments and concerns are identified on the state level by the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality in the biennial Water Quality Inventory Report (305(b) Report). A copy of this report may be obtained from the Department of Environmental Quality; 8001 National Drive; Little Rock, AR or from their website: Complete the following table showing the impaired waterbodies in the watershed, the non-supported uses, cause of non-support and the likely source of the pollutant as identified in the Water Quality Inventory Report. While some samples have been taken by DEQ, the overall water quality of Fourche Creek has never been assessed by the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality. They have acknowledged the need for data as well as the assumption of state of concern for Fourche Creeks. As a partner in this restoration project, ADEQ has committed to water quality testing and monitoring to establish baseline data and long term monitoring, all of which are taking place outside of this proposal. 3 Industrial Water Supply Irrigation Recreation Aquatic Life Other (please list) X X X 3. Give a general description of land uses in the watershed. Include any significant changes in land use. The heart, or what is sometimes referred to as the sink of Fourche Creek resides with the city limits of Little Rock, Arkansas. Fourche Creek is an urban stream and wetland area that meanders in and back out of city neighborhoods and parks, before it retreats into a 3,000 acre bottomland. There are numerous industries along Fourche Creek as well as a large active waste management dump and a city park that has been converted from a city dumping station. There are four golf courses along Fourche and/or it s major tributaries in Little Rock. There is even an important portion of the streamside property being used as a small cattle farm. There are two major mining operations that discharge into Fourche Creek both of which harvest nepheline synite rock. One of the mining corporations has a sediment discharge pond that drains into Fourche as well. A large are, some 2,000 plus acres, of the properties adjoining Fourche Creek are under an Audubon lease agreement with the City of Little Rock. Land adjacent to Fourche Creek has been developed near to its capacity bordering frequent inundation. A good portion of the properties adjacent to Fourche, outside of the heart or sink, are paved areas for parking and auto sale lots, roads, and surface water drainage.

4 4. The following land use activities may contribute to nonpoint source pollution. Estimate the degree to which each activity effects water quality in this watershed. Provide a reference if possible. If you are using professional judgement, please so state.
