Opportunities of the circular economy GREEN WEEK, , Bernhard Puttinger, ECO WORLD STYRIA

Green Technologies Overview Source: Roland Berger, 2012

Global Market Outlook Energy Efficiency (+3.9%/a) RES + Storage (+9.1%/a) Sustainable Mobility (+5.0%/a) Resource Efficiency (+7.6%/a) Recycling (+3.2%/a) Water (+5.0%/a) Global Green Tech market will grow from Bio. to ~4.400 Bio. in 2025 (+5.6%/a), high regional differences! 4 Styria STYRIA Region Region of Smart of Smart Growth. Growth 1.2 Mio. Inhabitants Pioneer region in recycling, hydro power, biomass and solar energy Change from heavy industries to knowledge based production, strategic focus on Green Tech European Top R&D-quota 4.7 %, 70% material recycling quota

101 Years of Green Tech Innovation Technological pioneers force change to knowledge-based production society Invention of Kaplan hydropower turbine Excellent research in centres of competences and 3 universities Headquarters settle in THE WORLD S GREEN TECH VALLEY Self assembly solar-groups Foundation of the the cluster More leading Green Tech Companies within 1 hour s drive than anywhere else

1st Address for Fresh Green Tech Technology leaders in smart waste sorting of glass and plastics Leading technologies for utilizing biomass waste to energy Global pionieer in next generation biofuel plants Integrated energy facades (solar, PV, wind)

The Cluster ECO WORLD STYRIA Vision - The World s Green Tech Valley - 20 Technology leaders within one hour s drive 4 strategic paths: Go Green Tech, foster R&D, new demonstration projects and exports Triple-Helix cluster: shareholders, members and financing from industry, R&D and administration. Founded 1998, 10 employees, 170 members

Action! Innovators Clubs: Industry and academia solve R&D challenges -> new projects Green Tech Radar shows potentials and readiness, e.g. rapid prototyping Joint Focus within regional research & economy strategy 1,200 Researchers focus on 3 topics in regional Green Tech Research Alliance Green Tech Challenge: Utopic solutions from students for businesses 20 innovation projects/a, international contracts -> faster growth

Opportunity 1: Better Designed and Produced Goods, e.g. Cars New LCA (Life Cycle Analysis) tools allow Green Product Design. Automotive: 95% recyclability, less CO2 (during life cycle). -> new design tools, OEMs require data and improvements by suppliers. New Business Models (rent, pay per use)! ECO + AC Styria develop joint tools and actions for SMEs

Opportunity 2: Biobased products, e.g. cellulose-net for food Cellulose net for mass production was developed by VPZ, is now replacing plastics in many European countries. Plus: 30% higher sales due to better surface feel. ECO supported market access (just a bit).

Opportunity 3: Re-Use e.g. of Batteries Smart City Graz Project consists of 60 m wood-tower (finished 2016) covered with 1st large scale organic PV. Exceeding electricity is stored in used batteries. ECO co-initiated project and company cooperations and will help utilizing building as science tower.

Opportunity 4: Advanced Recycling Binder+co presented world s leading opto-electronical glass sorting at IFAT 2014, done by Open Innovation. Other areas: ECO companies develop joint pilot project from household waste to alloy wheel.

Opportunity 5: New Waste to Energy Carriers, e.g. Torrefaction Biomass waste from agriculture or industry is processed as coal replacement e.g. in USA, BRICS - with no changes in logistics or power plant. ECO initiated new projects for biomass treatment

Opportunity 6: Yesterday s Resources - Landfill Mining ECO pilot action with 20 industrial partners: Recycling the waste of landfills. Next Opportunity: Growing Cities in China need to replace former landfills

High Regional Impact Companies created 7,500 new green tech jobs in 6 years, av. +10%/a Green Tech Turnover growth with av. 16.4%/a, faster than world markets with av. 10%/a Styrian products of last 5 years saved ~40 Mio. t CO2/a around the globe (2.5* Styrian emissions)

A Word from the Boss ECO shows how we can boost synergies between business and academia in sectors of innovation...* José Manuel Barroso, President of European Commission * Open Days EC Panorama Magazine May 2014
