Only 1.7% Indians paid income tax o Just over 2 crore Indians, or 1.7 % of the total population, paid income tax in the assessment year (AY) , according to data released by the I-T department. o The number of income-tax return filers increased to 4.07 crore in assessment year (FY ) from 3.65 crore in the previous year. o Only 2.06 crore actually paid tax as the others claimed income below taxable limits. Festival to revive tourism in the hills o Darjeeling will host the 5-day Teesta Rangit Tourism Festival o The 4-month strike has severely affected tourism, one of the biggest sources of income in the Darjeeling hills. o The festival will be held in phases in different hill towns. It will be held from Dec 27 to 29 in Darjeeling; Dec 28 and 29 in Kurseong; Dec 29 and 30 in Kalimpong; and Dec 30 and 31 in Mirik. Heather Menzies-Urich dies at 68 o Actor Heather Menzies-Urich, who played one of the singing 'von Trapp' children in the hit 1965 film 'The Sound of Music', has died. World s largest amphibious aircraft o China has launched homegrown AG600, the world s largest amphibious aircraft. o The plane is codenamed Kunlong. With a wingspan of 38.8 metres (127ft) and powered by four turboprop engines, the aircraft is capable of carrying 50 people and can stay airborne for 12 hours. o The amphibious aircraft has military applications but will be used for fire fighting and marine rescue. Centenary Celebrations of Yoga Institute o Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu has inaugurated the Centenary celebrations of the Yoga Institute in Mumbai. o The institute was founded by Shree Yogendraji Mani Haribhai Desai, the disciple of Paramahansa Madhavadasji in o It helps spread yoga practices. 4 o India is all set to get its first runway on a sea bridge, as the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has been given a nod to extend Lakshadweep s Agatti Airport. o The task will be carried out by building an RCC platform on the beach and shallow area which will allow bigger ATRs to operate on the island. o The Project is likely to cost about Rs 1,500 crore. World s Longest Glass Bridge in China o The world s longest glass bridge has been opened in China to the public. o Though it has a capacity to hold 2000 people, only 500 would be allowed at a time. o Located in Shijiazhuang, the bridge lies 218 meters above hanging between the two cliffs in Hongyagu Scenic Area in Pingshan county. o The bridge is 488 meters long & 2 meters wide, with two dragon statues on top that could produce smoke. Dr Jitendra Singh Launched e-hrms o The Union Minister of State (I/C) of the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), Dr Jitendra Singh launched the electronic- Human Resource Management System in New Delhi. o He launched it during the observance of Good Governance Day. o The e-service book launched for DoPT during March 2017 will also be integrated into the e-hrms. Vijay Rupani becomes CM of Gujarat o Vijay Rupani was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Gujarat state. o Governor Om Prakash Kohli administered the Oath of Office and Secrecy to 21 ministers including Mr. Rupani and his deputy Nitin Patel. o Along with Mr. Rupani as Chief Minister and Nitin Patel as his Deputy, a total of 19 ministers nine of them in cabinet rank and 10 MoS were sworn in. 5 o On 25th December 2017, Bengali actor Partha Mukhopadhyay died due to cardiac arrest at a private hospital in Kolkata. Partha Mukhopadhyay was 70 years old. o He had acted in films made by great directors like Tapan Sinha, Tarun Majumdar and Goutam Ghosh. o His important movies are Balika Bodhu, Dhonyi Meye, Agnishwar, Amar Prithivi, Baag Bandi Khela. Sushil becomes most expensive wrestler o Sushil Kumar became the most expensive wrestler of the PWL (Pro Wrestling League) in New Delhi. o Delhi Sultans bought Sushil Kumar for Rs 55 lakh at the PWL auctions. o World Championship gold medallist Helen Maroulis of the United States got the highest bid among women players and was bought for Rs 44 lakh from Haryana Hammers. World s biggest sand Santa face in Puri o On 24th December 2017, Sudarsan Pattnaik, international sand artist, created the world s biggest sand Santa-face with the message world peace at Puri beach, Odisha. o The sand Santa face is 25 feet tall and 50 feet wide. It is to be placed in the Limca Book of World Records. o Sudarsan Pattnaik also created a sand sculpture of Jesus Christ in front of the Santa face. NHPC to invest in solar project: Odisha o Central public sector enterprise, NHPC Ltd has proposed to set up Mw capacity solar project in Odisha. o Odisha has laid out a plan to develop a solar park with a production capacity of 1000 Mw. 5 P a g e

6 o NHPC, which is currently executing a 72 Mw wind project in Kerala and 50 Mw solar project in Tamil Nadu has already commissioned a 50 Mw wind power project in Jaisalmer. Modi to attend WEF meeting in 20 yrs o Modi will be the first Indian PM in past 20 years to attend the annual meeting of World Economic Forum at Davos, Switzerland. o The meeting is scheduled to be held in January o The World Economic Forum is an independent international organization committed to improving the state of the world. It was incorporated as a not-for-profit foundation in 1971, and is headquartered in Geneva. Corridors to link neighbour countries o Nitin Gadkari has stated that India will link its major highway corridors to international trade points in order to facilitate trade with bordering countries. o The linking of highway corridors to International trade points will be carried out for facilitating trade with Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Myanmar. o About 2000 km of highways will be constructed under this project. Ranking of Panchayats under Antyodaya o Rural Development Ministry has completed the ranking of Gram Panchayats on 3 parameters of physical infrastructure, human development & economic activities. o Mission Antyodaya aims to create poverty-free gram panchayats. o The goal is to converge, all existing govt. initiatives & schemes in these gram panchayats so that every household within these panchayats is benefited.
