FSLV Unites Citizens to Identify Stream Water Quality Issues 2002 FSLV received RPG for volunteer monitoring, coordinated with TU/DNR in Spring Cr. & E. Branch in the City Low DO and dh high h turbidity bd High phosphorus by today s standards Most (57%) fish species pollution tolerant Aquatic insects - moderate levels of pollution

And to address water quality problems Post 2002 DNR & TU stream improvement in Spring Creek and E. Branch, in the City of fl Lodi Post 2002 Rain garden project to reduce runoff to the creek from the City of Lodi 2007 City of Lodi receives UNPS&SW grant A plan was completed by a consultant but not yet adopted

2008 FSLV received another RPG for citizens to study the watershed Spring Cr. & tributaries Level I year 1 Level II year 2 Seven sites High school students 14 sites Temperature p 5 sites flows, YSI meter Photograph by Donna Melchior

Water Quality Issues BI (aquatic insects) Poor to fair downstream of the city DO <6.0 mg/l in a tributary and Spring Cr. upstream of city Higher than 71.6 F (22 C) instantaneous t water temperatures upstream of the city, and in the city below a stormwater t outlet t DO and Temp issues associated with rain events

One drop of water leads to To protect the stream into the future we need to be able to plan for future development. Watershed wide modeling approach through h 3 grants in 4 years 3rd year of staff gauge for water depth & flow data weekly to develop rating curves 5 stations

Spring Creek Rating Curve Development Riddle Road 2010 Flow meters/second

Another drop leads to 5 Level loggers will determine stream height g during g summer base flow & various rain events

a large pool of people, p money and resources! Multi-phase Water chemistry monitoring project 2011 county and citizens collected bi-weekly water chemistry for chloride, Phosphorus, Dissolved reactive P, nitrate-nitrite, nitrite, ammonia n, kjehldahl nitrogen, TSS 2012 continue basic water chemistry and add heavy metals water chemistry sampling sediment sampling

The Next hapter Final watershed Modeling effort by UWSP-CWS & CCLWCD Whatcanweexpectfromawatershedmodeling expect a watershed modeling effort? A tool for long range planning Provides BMP solutions to reduce runoff in watershed from agricultural and urban sources The community may decide to adopt urban SW Ordinance that they drafted but didn t adopt

It takes more than a whole village to protect and enhance a stream it takes an entire watershed community with eyes stream, wide open to the future - JMLU Photo by Donna Melchior
