2 Bismillahir Rahmaa Nir Rahiim. Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh and a very good morning/afternoon. Chairman, Excellencies, Madam Executive Secretary of United Nations ESCAP, Distinguished delegates, Ladies and Gentlemen, On behalf of the Brunei Darussalam delegation, I would like to take this opportunity to express our sincerest gratitude to the United Nations Economic and Social Commission in Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP) and the Royal Thai Government for the hospitality extended to us for the 73 rd Session of the Commission. Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen It is timely and fitting that the 73rd Session of ESCAP is being held under the theme Regional cooperation for sustainable energy Page 1 of 6

3 highlighting the importance of green growth and the efficient use of sustainable energy resources. According to the International Energy Outlook 2016, published by the International Energy Agency, by 2040, almost two-thirds of the world s primary energy will be consumed in the non-oecd economies. Distinguished Delegates, Ladies and Gentlemen In view of Goal 7 of the 2030 Development Agenda, Brunei Darussalam share a common concern to ensure, safe, secure, reliable and efficient supply and use of energy. Brunei Darussalam is actively implementing several measures in its effort to introduce energy saving measures for sustainable development, which, among others, include Energy Efficiency Conservation (EEC) measures and the introduction of a Renewable Energy policy to encourage investment in renewable energy systems. We are also planning to implement a large-scale solar project in one of our districts, the Temburong district. Page 2 of 6

4 Distinguished Delegates, Ladies and Gentlemen One of the goals of Brunei Vision 2035, is the emphasis on high quality of life for our people which include a safe and clean environment. This is in line with Goal 13 of the 2030 Development Agenda. In our efforts to take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts, Brunei Darussalam has ratified the Paris Agreement in Within the country s plans and targets for sustainability and combatting the adverse effects of climate change, Brunei Darussalam among others, aims to implement the following actions: Firstly, to cut down total energy consumption by 63 percent by 2035 from the Business as Usual case with 2009 as base year. This corresponds to an annual reduction of 6.95 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent in Secondly, to increase the total share of our power generation mix from renewable energy to 10 percent in 2035 that will allow us to avoid Page 3 of 6

5 producing emissions of about 720 thousand tonnes of CO2 equivalent, annually. Thirdly, to maintain and enhance our carbon sinks stock by increasing our forest reserves from 44 percent to 55 percent of our total land area. And finally, to continue cooperation with all the relevant government and private sector agencies in raising awareness regarding the effects of Climate Change by reaching out to the public, and most importantly students. Distinguished delegates, Ladies and Gentlemen At the regional level, in addressing the challenges of sustainable energy growth and climate change, Brunei Darussalam supports ASEAN s Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) with the theme Enhancing Energy Connectivity and Market Integration in ASEAN to Achieve Energy Security, Accessibility, Affordability and Sustainability for All whereby the key strategies among others include energy efficiency and conservation, and renewable energy. 6 In light of our national strategic goals and our regional commitments, we are supportive of this year s theme of Regional cooperation for sustainable energy. Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen, Realising the 2030 Development Agenda requires ongoing cooperation amongst Member States thus, we believe that ESCAP continues to play an important role for Regional cooperation for sustainable energy. Brunei Darussalam joins the global community in promoting green growth and the use of sustainable energy resources. Therefore, we encourage the Commission s continuous hard work in sustainable development. Finally, we commend the Commission s ongoing endeavours in this important development agenda for humanity and the planet. Page 5 of 6
