3 A-3 Information about the Project A-3.1 Short description of the environmental problem TPP Kakanj is located in the region of Central Bosnia near the River Bosna. TPP Kakanj has seven units but only three of them (No. 5, 6 and 7) are operating with total gross capacity of 450 MWe. The boilers are wet bottom type and they are fired by brown coal with a low heat value of 13,602 kj/kg and the sulphur content of 2.4 %. The coal is produced in the local mine near the TPP. The flue gases from all three units are discharged through a 300 m high stack. Output concentration of SO 2 in flue gases is 8,311 mg/nm 3 at dry basis (6% O 2 ) (average annually concentration for year). A-3.2 Origins and positive environmental impact of the project A TPP Kakanj has negative impact on cities of Kakanj and Visoko (cities are only 2 Project and 10 kilometers away from TPP). In specific weather situation with NW wind, justification the acid gas emissions from TPP have influence to Sarajevo the capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina appr. 30 kilometers away form TPP. It is also assumed that acid rain crosses international boundaries into adjoining states. A Project objectives A Project components (phases) A Expected positive environmental effects A Health impact of the project Implementation of the project will assist to reduce present SO 2 emissions in order to achieve the compliance with national laws and to meet the requirements of the LCP Directive 2001/80/EC and Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution. - Feasibility study for de-sulphurisation of flue gases for units 5, 6 & 7 - Detailed engineering designs - Construction - Operation - - Increase the quality of the air; - Protect the health of the ecosystems and environmental segments; - To protect the health of the population. Protecting the health and well-being of the population in the region. A Size of population benefiting from the project implementation In Kakanj approximately people. Also, in Visoko approximately people, and in Sarajevo approximately people. It is important to stress that this project is of regional importance. 4 A Operation (for existing projects) N/A N/A N/A A Description of critical factors affecting project implementation: EPLANATION The amount estimated for the de-sulphurisation of flue gases for units 5, 6 and 7 in Thermo Power Plant Kakanj is around 60 million EUR. The number was taken from the working version of the "Generation Investment Study in South East Europe". The study was developed by a consortium of enterprises: PWC, MWH, Atkins and Adica Consultants and financed by EC and WB. The goal of the study is to assist EC, IFIs and donors to define the list of priorities in production of power and its infrastructure. Our enterprise hasn t got the final version of this study although it was to be completed by the end of In the study 58,5 million EUR was estimated only for the installation (for blocks 5, million EUR for each and for the block million EUR), while the rest of the money is planned for financing the development of feasibility study for de-sulphurisation of a flue gases in Thermo Poweri Plant Kakanj.
