Wood Combustion Heating Energy from Wood A Renaissance of the first form of Energy known to Man Foil 2, 02/2007 Viessmann Manufacturing

Why biomass? Wood is CO 2 neutral source of energy Wood is a sustainable source of energy and helps to maintain independence Wood is a local staple and can be harvested with a minimal energy input Wood as fuel contributes to our regional economy, creates and safes jobs Modern wood heating systems, if properly operated and maintained, burn very clean and meet similar emission levels than fossil fuel burners. Modern wood heating systems are very reliable In times of soaring energy prices burning wood is economically highly competitive Foil 3, 02/2007 Viessmann Manufacturing

What is CO 2 neutral? Through Photosynthesis wood uses solar energy to grow Burning wood releases the same amount of CO 2 as it used for it s growth and as it would release if it would be left to rot Under the condition of sustainable forestry the amount released will be used for growth of new wood Foil 4, 02/2007 Viessmann Manufacturing

Wood is stored Solar Energy! Foil 5, 02/2007 Viessmann Manufacturing

How Clean is it to burn Wood? 30 years of wood combustion research the results Year Development of emissions of Austrian Biomass Boilers, measured by the federal agency for agricultural engineering Wieselburg (BLT), 2005 Foil 6, 02/2007 Viessmann Manufacturing

How Efficient is it to burn Wood? Average efficieny of wood boilers increased from 50% to over 90% Year Efficiency of Austrian Biomass Boilers, measured by the federal agency for agricultural engineering Wieselburg (BLT), 2005 Foil 7, 02/2007 Viessmann Manufacturing

Provability and Reliability of Biomass Systems? Fact box There are more than pellet boilers (residential, commercial and industrial) running in Germany Worldwide pellet production expected to reach 100 Million tonnes per year before 2020 a wood fuel becomes a commodity Viessmann has 30 years of biomass experience Viessmann produces more than 500 biomass boilers for the commercial, institutional and industrial sector and thousands of residential biomass boiler per year In central Europe biomass boilers have already a higher market share then oil boilers Wood fuels accounts for 25% of the heating energy in Austria Foil 8, 02/2007 Viessmann Manufacturing

Different Fuels Forest wood and plantation wood: Mature wood from trunks and branches, untreated and chopped Compressed wood, pellets: untreated wood with limited bark content, compressed by machine Remnants from derived timber products: Usually a mixture of untreated and treated wood in form of shavings, chips, sawdust Used wood: Essentially untreated wood that has been used prior to its energetic utilization (e.g. pallets) Foil 10, 02/2007 Viessmann Manufacturing

Quality of wood fuels Chemical Content Natural Wood % By Weight Carbon (C) 49 Hydrogen (H) 6 Oxygen (O) 44 Ash (Potassium, Sodium, Calcium, Phosphorus, Silicon,...) 0.8 (trunk wood spruce incl. bark) There is a tremendous variety of different wood fuels with different chemical specifications and therefore of different qualities. The quality of the fuel is a central factor financially and environmentally! Foil 11, 02/2007 Viessmann Manufacturing

Impact Mineral Contents A higher mineral content means more ash A higher mineral content usually means lower ash sintering points Lower ash melting point will lead to clinkers Clinkers destroy the grate over time Potassium (K), Magnesium (Mg) and Sodium (Na), lower the ash sintering point while Calcium (Ca) increases it. All fast growing plants produce more ash and are therefore more difficult to burn Foil 12, 02/2007 Viessmann Manufacturing

Thermal Value of Wood Fuels Water Content W (in %) Thermal Value Absolute (in BTU/lb) Transport Density (in lb/ft 3 ) Wood Pellets Forest wood chips, dry Forest wood chips, wet Heating Oil Foil 13, 02/2007 Viessmann Manufacturing

Implications of fuel quality The fuel quality defines: Technical specification of the combustion chamber and the feeding system Specification and Size of the storage facility Overall efficiency Maintenance effort Emissions Emission treatment (filter, cyclones e.g.) Life expectancy of boilers and conveyance equipment Foil 14, 02/2007 Viessmann Manufacturing

Boiler Approvals All boilers have CSA systrem approval. All boilers are built according ASME Section IV and come in a 30psig and a 60psig pressure stage. Foil 20, 02/2007 Viessmann Manufacturing

Conclusion Biomass will be an important fuel in the future s energy mix According to a study published by Fernando Preto (Biomass and Renewables Group Leader Natural Resources Canada) biomass heat is the most efficient and inexpensive use of biomass in order to mitigate CO2 The technology is proven and available in North America now!
