Warm up # 5 What is 1 lab safety rule? Warm up # 4 What 3 things are harming the suisun marsh? 1

Warm up # 5 What are each of these used to measure? 1. ruler 2. Stopwatch 3. Scale 4. Thermometer 5. Graduated cylinder/ beaker Table of Contents TC 1 Assignments Page # 1. Lab tools 1 2. Scientific Inquiry notes 2

Scientific Inquiry Notes What do you think scientists do to answer their questions about science? 3

What do you think scientists do to answer their questions about science? 4

Why is the sky blue? Earth is surround in something called an atmosphere 5

The atmosphere is filled with different particles like air (O2), carbon dioxide (CO2), Nitrogen (N), and etc. These particles allow all color light pass through them except the color blue Like a mirror that reflects all color light, these air molecules reflect the blue color. The blue color scatter. The blue color light bounces off numerous particles and colors the sky blue. 6

- Add to existing knowledge 8

Scientific Inquiry Steps Does milk help a plant grow better than water can? 9

- what do you know already? - what do you know already? Plants need water, sun light, and carbon dioxide to grow 10

- what do you know already? Plants need water, sun light, and carbon dioxide to grow - what do you know already? Plants need water, sun light, and carbon dioxide to grow Milk has more minerals like calcium, magnesium, zinc and etc. compared to water 11

- what do you know already? Plants need water, sun light, and carbon dioxide to grow Milk has more minerals like calcium, magnesium, zinc and etc. compared to water - collect information that may help make a hypothesis 12

My hypothesis is that milk will help the plant grow faster than water 13

My hypothesis is that water will help a plant grow faster than milk. 14

*experiments must be repeatable! Have 2 plants that are the same. both given the same amount of sunlight, soil, amount of liquids, all given at the same time. The only thing that changes is the type of liquid. One gets milk and one gets water *experiments must be repeatable! 15

Independent variable = the one factor that gets changed What is the one thing I am changing between these two plants? Independent variable = the one factor that gets changed What is the one thing I am changing between these two plants? 16

What does our data tell us? What can we conclude? "based on our data, we can conclude that..." correct? 20

hypothesis was your You re-think a new hypothesis and do the experiment again! Why do you think it is important to only have 1 factor that changes? for example, different amount of sun light and different liquids? 21

We wont be able to tell what actually caused the plant to grow, amount of sun light or type of fluid. that is why we only test for 1 thing 22
