3 Changes in Ω Ar in surface waters GOMECC region from 2007 to 2012 Expected OA change from 2007 to 2012 but much larger changes observed Wanninkhof et al. 2015

7 BROWN SHRIMP

8 HARMFUL ALGAL BLOOMS How will OA affect the occurrence and toxicity of various HAB species?

10 NOAA USGS FWS BOEM NPS NSF NASA EPA DOS USDA DOE Federal Ocean Acidification Research and Monitoring (FOARAM) Act of 2009 IWG - OA FOARAM ACT NSF NASA The NOAA Ocean Acidification Program (OAP) was established under SEC of the Federal Ocean Acidification and Monitoring Act (FOARAM) to oversee and coordinate research, monitoring, and other activities consistent with the strategic research and implementation plan developed by the interagency working group on ocean acidification. NOAA Ocean Acidification Program (SEC ) Foster, direct, coordinate: (A) interdisciplinary research to improve understanding of ocean acidification; (B) establish a long-term monitoring program for ocean acidification (C) research to identify and develop adaptation strategies for conservation of marine ecosystems; (D) educational opportunities exploring the impacts of ocean acidification; (E) national public outreach (F) coordination of ocean acidification monitoring and impacts research with other appropriate international ocean science bodies

27 HOW WE PARTNER WITH IOOS RAS NOAA OAP leverages IOOS observing assets, adding sensors to existing moorings NOAA OAP funds partnering PIs through the IOOS Regional Associations for mooring and cruise operations IOOS RAs provide and augment logistical support for OA observing assets IOOS RAs provide access to real time data from OA assets National IOOS and OAP are jointly funding OA sensor development Hold joint workshops (eg: in the Chesapeake Bay) and now Coastal Acidification Networks
