What Is A Smart City? Attractivity of natural conditions Pollution Co2 reduction Low carbon technology needs Environmental Protection Sustainable resource management Smart Environment Smart Economy Innovative Spirit Entrepreneurship Economic image and trademarks Productivity Flexibility of labour market International embeddedness Ability to transform Low Carbon technology and affordable warmth Smart Mobility Local accessibility (inter-) national accessibility Availability of ICT infrastructure Sustainable, innovative and safe transport systems Advanced energy distribution systems Participation in decision making Public and social services Transparent governance Political strategies and perspectives Optimum utility investment. Smart Governance Smart People Level of qualification Affinity to lifelong learning Social and ethnic plurality Flexibility Creativity Cosmopolitan open mindedness Participation in public life Thought Leadership Culture / Health / Housing Education / Tourism Social Cohesion Affordable Energy and Warm Homes Smart Living 4

Smart City Drivers for Change Emissions Impossible? Can our existing energy systems deliver a low-carbon future? UK Commitment to deliver: 35% of electrical energy from renewable s by % of zero carbon electrical energy by % CO 2 reduction in energy and transport by % CO 2 emission reduction for Glasgow by

Example - Smart City Modelling in Glasgow Framework Programme 7 (FP7) STEP-UP Project (EU) STEP-UP: Strategies Towards Energy Performance and Urban Planning (STEP - UP) 3.7 million project which runs from Autumn 2012 to Spring 2015 Partner Cities: Glasgow, Ghent, Riga & Gothenburg Aim: Enhance Sustainable Energy Action Plan (SEAP) for each City Key ScottishPower Tasks: Map energy consumption across City & highlight key energy users Relate energy data to key City stakeholder data Local Development Plan, Social Housing Investment, etc Create a Low Carbon Project Feasibility Workspace Highlight the potential to link these key infrastructure projects with future development in the City Evolution of IFI project that has gone before 10

FP7 STEP-UP How has GIS Helped? Local Development Plans (Council) Planning Applications (Council) Mastermap & AL2 building info (OS) Building Use Info (Local stakeholders) Demographic data (Council and Government) Multiple datasets Multiple formats Varied sources => Confusion Known Energy Usage: Public buildings (Council, NHS, Police/Fire Service, etc) Infrastructure Maps & Plans: Gas, Electricity & Water (Local utilities) Low-carbon project developments (Council, Developers, Local Stakeholders) 11

FP7 STEP-UP How has GIS Helped? Local Development Plans (Council) Planning Applications (Council) Mastermap & AL2 building info (OS) Building Use Info (Local stakeholders) Demographic data (Council and Government) Low carbon future scenarios: what do we want City to look like? Single database in a unified format => Clarity Energy Plan for City Known Energy Usage: Public buildings (Council, NHS, Police/Fire Service, etc) Infrastructure Maps & Plans: Gas, Electricity & Water (Local utilities) Low-carbon project developments (Council, Developers, Local Stakeholders) 12

Example - Smart City Modelling in Glasgow PhD Research at GCU; Renewable Heat Mapping Will develop a map displaying subsurface geological data including abandoned mine workings using ArcGIS. Using this data, we aim to quantify the geothermal resource beneath specific areas in Glasgow. Matching these results with above ground energy demand data, will help identify opportunities for ground source heat pump installations. Specific water and soil chemistry investigations, CoP studies etc will be conducted as part of the research project. 15
