3 Natural and Recycled Materials Cncrete is an envirnmentally friendly building prduct cmpsed f bth natural and recycled materials. Amng thse recycled materials are cncrete aggregate, fly ash and irn xide. During the manufacturing prcess, waste cncrete is ften prduced. T reduce the amunt f waste destined fr landfills, mst manufacturers crush this cncrete int aggregate and reuse it. Fly ash, a waste material prduced and then discarded by cal burning plants, is anther cmpnent used t manufacture cncrete retaining wall units. SRW units use synthetic irn xide, made by burning recycled scarp steel at high temperatures, t clr the units. Wind, rain and water runff displace sil particles frm bare r sparsely cvered earth reducing the stability f the riginal site resulting in impaired perfrmance f dwnstream drainage systems. In many instances, SRWs are cst-effective slutins t sil ersin. Keystne prducts are ften used in cnservatin effrts alng channels and waterways, near steep earthen slpes and ther critical applicatins. When taller wall heights are required, gegrid reinfrcement may be an apprpriate slutin and can be added t a wall design. The result is a lng-term, ecnmical slutin that minimizes r eliminates sil ersin. 4

5 Recycled Durability Cncrete SRW units ffer a lng-lasting retaining wall slutin fr bth structural and landscaping prjects. As a durable building material, cncrete s lifespan surpasses that f alternatives such as timber r railrad ties. Cncrete units resist weathering actin, chemical attack and abrasin while maintaining the desired engineering prperties. Nt nly are SRW units made frm recycled materials, units can als be recycled. When a SRW is n lnger needed, r desired, the units can simply be remved frm the site and repsitined elsewhere r crushed and recycled int new units. 5
