Green Building Council Italia Green Building: le esperienze italiane e le prospettiva internazionali AIMING AT GREEN AND LOW ENERGY Manuela Ojan CE GBC Italia 10 marzo 2017 In collaborazione con

Agenda Sustainable construction rating systems Energy asthe keytopic Italian experience German experience Italcementi «Ilab»: Bergamo - ITALY 1

Why sustainable construction and green buildings Comfort and well being of occupants Lower environmental and local impacts Increased value, also on long term, reduced operation and maintenance expenses Sustainable construction rating systems promote the triple bottom line, along the building life cycle Indoor air quality Ventilation and humidity control Acoustic Lighting Wellbeing Renewable energy Energy efficiency Water savings Waste separate collection Higher occupancy rate Lower fuel consumption, electricity usage, and drinkable water Maintenance costs saving 3

Approach to sustainable construction: a design choice Italcementi «Ilab»: Bergamo - ITALY Light and comfort Innovation Materials Captive renewable energy HeidelbergCement: Leimen - GERMANY Thermal inertia of the building Smart grid and district heating Dynamic control strategy Cost efficiency

LEED rating: Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design

Ilab: daylighting& lighting for high comfort design for maximum (daylight and views): 60% external glass surface triple layer insulating and acoustic glass balance of environmental factors: heat gain and loss, glare control,.. Shading devices to control glare and reduce solar gain

Ilab: renewable energy 420 panels =500m kw/year (-50t CO2)

Materials: a life cycle sustainable choice Recycled content (2/2) Local materials (2/2) Project innovation (5/5) Use of Materials with Substantial Environmental Benefits : reduce cleaning and pollutants 9

DGNB rating: quality first Life Cycle Costing Thermal confort

Best energy performance o Thermal comfort: application of Thermally Activated Building Structure (TAB) system o o o Building envelop quality: take maximum advantage of thermal mass of the concrete Renewable energy usage from district heating (fed with CHP) and waste heat recovery from the ventilation system Building Automation System

EfficienttemperaturecontrolsystemwithTABS (thermal activated building structure) Concrete ceilings in the office areas are heated/cooled with a concrete core activation near the surface Passive radiant heating/cooling reduces air-conditioning needs Floor covering Screed Slab Hollow floor 14 Polymer pipes

Building envelop ensuring low thermal transmittance, comfort and durability The supporting structure consists of a maintenance-free reinforced concrete skeleton construction Concrete based sandwich façade Entrance area and public areas are exposed to visible concrete For the heat exchange to take place, concrete should: o o be in contact with the indoor air if supposed to dampen the temperature variations, not be covered by wallpapers, carpets etc., and be exposed to sun radiation if supposed to store free solar heating Energy performance modelling (dynamic simulation)

Leimen: experiencing structural thermal energy storage The building sector today has to be seen as a part of a larger energy system The development of sustainable energy systems and cities, with the help of e.g. smart energy grids, leads to that the importance of thermal inertia has increased Buildings with high thermal inertia decrease the power peaks and move the power demand in time, which in the future can be optimized as an important part of smart energy grids This applies if preheating and precooling are applied in case of electrified HVAC or district heating/cooling Automation and control systems to be applied 2

Conclusion Design choices look for the best solutions with respect to different rating systems credits and local conditions Innovation in materials and solutions is relevant for scoring Energy performance is a key topic Smart energy(concrete) buildings are rewarded
