Renewable Energy Potential from Animal Manure Chris Voell, National Program Manager, AgSTAR U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Manure Digester Biogas Methane capture and use projects directly and indirectly reduce greenhouse gas emissions while generating energy! Baseload generation 1

Methane Methane 100-year global warming potential (GWP = 25) Short lifetime 12 years Primary component of natural gas Great energy source Many opportunities to reduce emissions Energy, livestock and waste sectors 50-70% of methane emissions are anthropogenic Comparative effects of methane over 100 and 20 year time horizon 100-year Methane has a much larger influence on near term climate effects. 20-year 2

Why advance manure digester systems? Assist US livestock producers in protecting and conserving natural resources (air, water, land, energy). Expand opportunities for rural economic development. Enhance next-generation interest in farming. Increase the generation of farm-based renewable energy (electricity, biogas, fuel). Reduce emissions of greenhouse gases generated by US livestock producers. Diversify value-added byproducts produced from digesters and increase revenue to US livestock producers. Help meet the demand for green energy and products. What are Anaerobic Digesters? Anaerobic digestion is a biological treatment and stabilization process that consumes organic matter in an oxygen-free environment. Anaerobic Digester Systems : collect and combust off-gases from liquid, slurry, and semisolid waste separate manure treatment from storage functions, which can result in lower initial installation costs for new or expanding farms. Could include nutrient treatment component 3

Digesters Around the World Manure Biogas Use Combined Heat and Power Electricity for on-farm needs with excess to grid Capture heat to warm digester - could provide heat, hot water or steam for farm or neighboring operations when heat available exceeds the needs of the digester Electricity Internal combustion engines, microturbines, fuel cells For on-farm use and/or sale to grid Medium Btu fuel ( Btu/scf) Boiler, kiln, heater, chiller, greenhouse, etc. Supplement NG and propane use High Btu upgrade ( Btu/scf) Pipeline injection, vehicle fuel Flare 4

Value-Added Benefits 5

US Market Potential USDA/EPA Agreement May 2010 This is a smart way to transform what would be a harmful greenhouse pollutant into a source of renewable energy -- and make a profit for American farmers, said EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson. The AgStar program brings real benefits to our air and creates new opportunities for our farming community. The farms and ranches that dot our countryside can contribute greatly to addressing America s long-term energy challenges and the partnership we are announcing today will not only help generate renewable energy, but provide new income opportunities for farmers and ranchers, said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. 6

AgSTAR Mission AgSTAR is a voluntary effort jointly sponsored by the EPA and USDA. The program encourages the use of methane recovery technologies (manure digesters) at animal feeding operations. These technologies reduce methane emissions i while achieving i other environmental benefits and generating energy.
