Suppor'ng city energy strategy for buildings with project ACCENT t in the context of EIT Climate-KiC ac'ons Sara Picone SUNSHINE Final Conference Bologna, January 14, 2016

About EIT Climate-KIC Created in 2010 by the European Ins'tute of Innova'on and Technology (EIT) as one of the first three Knowledge Innova'on Communi'es The EIT is an EU body whose mission is to foster sustainable growth delivering innova'on through the triple helix approach Climate-KIC is now the EU s largest public private partnership addressing climate change

Climate KIC: the community Mission bringing together, inspire and empower a dynamic community to build a zero carbon economy via innova'on Vision Europe leading the global transforma'on towards sustainability Ac4vites Educa'on programs, Innova'on projects, support to entrepreneurship Research Government & Public Bodies Innova4on domain Educa4on Business Paris, France Berlin, Germany Utrecht, The Netherlands Zurich, Switzerland London, UK Copenhagen, Nordic Valencia, Spain Central Hungary, Hungary Emilia-Romagna, Italy Lower Silesia, Poland Hessen, Germany West Midlands, UK Cork and Dublin Northern Portugal Slovenia Helsinki and Uusima Timis Estonia

Emilia-Romagna as Climate KIC regional center Regional Innova4on and Implementa4on Community focused on leading the transforma'on of innova'on policy and prac'ce on climate change through the public procurement of innova've products and services. Local Agencies: Entrerprises: Research ins4tu4ons: Local authori4es: AESS Agency for Energy and Sustainable Development of Modena ARPA Regional Agency for Environmental Protec'on of Emilia-Romagna ASTER Regional consor'um for innova'on and technology transfer CCPB Srl Cer'fica'on organism for organic and sustainable products MEEO Srl Metheorological Environmental Earth Observa'on SINERGIS ICT service provider Proambiente Industry-research consor'um CMCC Euro-Mediterranean Centre on Climate Change CNR-IBIMET Ins'tute of Biometheorology of the Na'onal Research Council University of Bologna Municipality of Bologna Urban Center Bologna

Ci'es: a climate priority Facts Ci'es are responsible for 60 up to 80% of the global CO 2 emissions 70% of the world s popula'on will live in ci'es by 2030, mostly in developing countries Global energy related emissions represent about 2/3 of the total (IEA, 2015), and ci'es consume about 78% of the world s energy An Energy Transi4on is needed calling for integrated, interoperable, scalable and replicable systemic solu'ons to underpin the carbon-nega've, responsive, resilient ci'es of the future

The building sector must be addressed to meet climate targets In Eu, buildings account for 40% of total energy use and 36% of CO 2 emissions (EU, 2010) Nearly 40% of all residen'al buildings in the EU were built before 1960 and almost 84% are at least 20 years old (IEA, 2012) About 70% of energy needs derives from space hea'ng (JRC, 2012) Source: BPIE, 2011

Demand for tools to support building energy planning

ACCENT Accompany ci'es in energy strategy A project meant to support ci'es in planning their energy transi'on A Climate KIC Innova'on project by 9 partners across Europe Embedded in the Urban Transi'on theme Timeline: Proof of concept: 2014 Demonstra'on Market readiness 2017

The complexity of energy planning Urban data Renewable energy developers Local authori'es (ci'es, region) Climate & Energy Targets Energy suppliers Urban planners Heat network operators Refurbishment companies Ci4zens Hea'ng systems retailers
