Terminology: Storm water conveyance system (sloped surfaces, swales, culverts, inlets, catch basins, detention ponds, etc.)

Terminology (Cont.): Outfall Point where runoff leaves your facility. Discharge The point and time which runoff leaves the facility and enters another drainage system or waterbody.

Terminology (Cont.): Storm Water - This one is obvious Non-Storm Water - Again obvious, but there are two categories (Allowable & Illicit).

Common storm water pollutant sources: ph Total Suspended Solids (TSS) Oil & Grease (O&G) Metals Pesticides Nitrates Bacteria

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Benjamin Franklin The best pollution prevention starts before the job begins!

Observe operations (fueling, washing, maintenance, material storage, etc.): Determine the operation s exposure to storm water. Understand how your facility s runoff flows and where is leaves the site (Outfall).

Pollution Prevention Best Management Practice (BMPs): Two types of BMPs Structural & Non-Structural BMPs Structural BMPs: Overhead coverage Secondary containment Inlet protection devices Erosion control devices Non-Structural BMPs: Sweeping regiments Inspection regiments Material handling procedures

Vehicle/Equipment Operations Do s: DO as much as possible perform vehicle/equipment maintenance or repair inside or under cover. If vehicle/equipment outdoor maintenance is unavoidable, DO protect nearby storm drains and contain maintenance as much as possible.

Vehicle/Equipment Operations Do s (Cont.): DO routinely inspect stored vehicles and equipment for leaks or staining. DO use drip pans and absorbents as temporary fixes. DO remove drip pans and absorbents prior to wet weather.

Vehicle/Equipment Operations Don ts: DON T forget to perform good housekeeping indoors! DON T limit pollution prevention or good housekeeping to vehicle fluids. DON T leave spent absorbents!

Washing Activities: Wash water is not an allowable non-storm water discharge. Wash waters contains pollutants such as oils, greases, metals, and detergents.

Washing Activities Do s: Do only wash vehicles & equipment in a designated wash water capturing systems, or in an area runoff is not possible. Do inspect washing areas routinely for containment breaches or entry into the storm water conveyance system.

Washing Activities Don ts: Don t wash vehicles or equipment near storm drains or other storm water conveyance areas. Don t wash oily parts or other oily debris on to facility surfaces.

Fueling Activities Do s: Do identify storm drains in the fueling area. Do give high consideration to flow restriction devices for fueling areas. Do have adequate spill kits present. Do routinely inspect and restock spill supplies.

Fueling Activities Don ts: Don t provide employees with access to the fueling area without training on appropriate spill response protocols. Don t forget to routinely inspect (especially prior to predicted rain events) for drips and staining.

Material management Do s: Do keep drums and containers closed or sealed while not in use. Do where possible, transfer contents of product containers or waste materials in controlled environments. Do store hazardous waste & materials in contained areas with overhead coverage. Do maintain adequate spill response equipment.

Material management Don ts: DON T leave containers with residual materials outside or uncovered. DON T forget to check containment structures for rain water accumulation. DON T store hazardous materials in precarious positions or in high traffic areas. DON T leave spent absorbents!

Trash and Recycling Bin Management Do s: Do keep bins covered when not in use. Do inspect bins to ensure they are in good shape, free of leaks. Do secure bins to ensure only authorized personnel have access.

Trash and Recycling Bin Management Do s: Do keep bins covered when not in use. Do inspect bins to ensure they are in good shape, free of leaks. Do secure bins to ensure only authorized personnel have access.

Trash and Recycling Bin Management Don ts: Don t place oily parts/debris in bins. Don t empty liquids into trash/recycling bins. Don t store bins that have the potential to leak near the storm water conveyance system.

Outdoor Material Storage Do s: Do protect drainage areas during loading and unloading operations Depending on the material storm drain protection may be needed. Do routinely inspect bone yards, material storage areas, or stockpiled materials for pollutant sources.

Outdoor Material Storage Don ts: Don t store hazardous materials or materials with spill potential outside (unprotected). Don t park or store vehicles or equipment over storm drains or other conveyance systems. Don t neglect drip pans under outdoor vehicles or equipment.

Do utilize overhead coverage to prevent exposure of potential pollutant sources to storm water runoff. Overhead coverage can be: Permanent structures Temporary structures

Facility Surfaces: Facility surfaces should be routinely inspected for: Oil staining Material Spills Sediment Track out

Contractor BMPs: BMP expectations should be conveyed to through: Contract language Verbal discussion Pre-job walks Facility signage Job inspections

Hands on BMP Demonstration: Spill supplies Drip & stain management Drain inlet protection Surface sediment control Vehicle & equipment washing
