2 1 PREFACE Beginning with January 2014 the Statistics Department provides its users monthly bulletins on International Merchandise Trade Statistics (IMTS), despite Quarterly and Annual Foreign Trade Statistics being published since The monthly bulletins provide users with data on imports, exports and re-exports by commodity and country and trade by mode of transport. It is hoped that the improvement in the frequency of the bulletins will benefit user s better plan, negotiate trade deals and development policies. More detailed trade figures on quarterly report including detailed IMTS by sectors and duty paid. Over time the Statistics Department hopes to improve on the turnaround time of the monthly IMTS bulletins. Of the total exports, domestic exports were $1,248,933 and reexports were $479,093. Compared to December 2013, imports decreased by $9,327,374 (24.7%) whilst total exports also decreased by $174,779 (9.2%). The decrease in total exports was driven by a decrease of $269,386 (17.7%) in domestic exports. When compared with the December 2013 deficit of $35,934,610 the January 2014 deficit was 25.5 per cent lower. The lower deficit is due to a decrease in the imports of machinery, mechanical and electrical appliances, and the prepared foodstuffs. Imports Graph 2: Balance of Trade 0-10,000,000-20,000,000-30,000,000-40,000,000 Months Composition of imports The major imports by HS Sections were Mineral products which accounted for 34.5 per cent, followed by Prepared foodstuffs, beverages, spirits & tobacco at 13.9 per cent, Live animals; animal products at 12.4 per cent, Machinery and mechanical appliances, electrical equipment, and parts thereof at 8.3 per cent, and Chemicals and allied products at 6.3 per cent. 4 Value $ Percentage of Re-Exports Percentage of Domestic Exports 3 Domestic exports Composition of domestic exports The major exports by HS sections were Vegetable products which accounted for 48.1 per cent, followed by Live animals; animal products at 39.0 per cent, and Wood, cork and articles thereof & plaiting materials at 7.9 per cent. The rest (5.1 per cent) was shared by other groups Graph 4: Composition of Domestic Exports HS Sections Performance of principal domestic exports in February 2014 Dominating the principal domestic exports in January 2014 were Fish which was 35.7 per cent of total domestic exports; followed by Kava at 18.5 per cent; Root crops at 14.8 per cent; and Fresh brown coconuts at 13.7 per cent. Together they comprised 82.7 per cent of domestic exports. Re-exports Composition of re-exports The major re-exports by HS sections were Mineral products which accounted for 69.9 per cent, followed by Machinery and mechanical appliances, electrical equipment and parts thereof at 15.6 per cent and Base metals and articles thereof at 10.2 per cent. The rest (4.3 per cent) was shared by other groups. Graph 5: Composition of Re-exports Direction of Trade HS Sections Major Suppliers of Imports New Zealand is the main supplier of imports for January 2014 followed by Singapore, Malaysia, United States of America, Fiji and Australia. Collectively, these countries accounted for 83.5 per cent of the total imports value. 5 4 Mode Value $ Major destinations Tonga s major export destinations in January 2014 were New Zealand, United States of America, Japan, Australia and Taiwan. Collectively, these countries accounted for 77.4 per cent of total exports value Graph 7: Major Destinations January 2014 Jan-13 Nov-13 Dec-13 Jan-14 Months Australia Japan NZ Taiwan USA Trade by Geographical Regions Tonga s trade analysed by Geographical Regions show that in terms of imports, Asia dominated with 44.6 per cent of imports originating from Asia, followed by Oceania with 40.9 per cent. In terms of exports, Oceania dominated with 45.4 per cent of total exports going to Oceania.
