WELCOME TO BBIA

INTRODUCTION WHO WE ARE The Bio-Based and Biodegradable Industries Association (BBIA) is the UK trade body for companies producing bio-based and biodegradable products. OUR MISSION Our mission is to promote and develop the production and use of bio-based and biodegradable products in the UK. We want to unite those working in the biodegradable and bio-based industries and to develop partnerships with those who share our vision: to put the bioeconomy agenda at the centre of the political debate on sustainability and economic growth in the UK. WHO WE REPRESENT Members include companies making biopolymers (chemicals); companies converting biopolymers into bio-based and biodegradable B2B and B2C products; companies in the packaging, lubricants, enzymes, pesticides and tableware sectors; investment companies; other associations working on similar themes. The bio-based sector provides more than 22 million jobs in the EU, encompassing the sustainable production of renewable resources and their conversion into food, feed, fibres, materials and chemicals through innovative technologies, providing widespread economic, environmental and social benefits. Our aim is to make the UK a world-leading production base for bio-chemicals and their products and to develop markets for these. MEMBERS ROLE Members will offer expert guidance and bring their experiences to bear in engagement with policy makers, civil servants and the public to help establish a more competitive, innovative and sustainable Britain. Members will be able to participate through the association in the development of standards for materials and products deriving from bio-based and biodegradable polymers; participate in the events and debates organised by BBIA involving policy makers, partner industries and the investment sector; bring their products, experiences and research to the attention of a wider audience of interested parties through the networking experiences the Association offers.

SCOPE To develop the circular bioeconomy in the UK, to promote markets and production of bio-based and biodegradable chemicals, their transformation into consumer and other products and materials. Agriculture and Forestry The Association will work on a wide-ranging series of topics related to bio-based and biodegradable materials and products including, but not exclusive to, promoting: Enzymes The production of bio-based and biodegradable chemicals and their derived consumer products in the UK. Textiles The development of research and scientific analyses of the production, consumption and transformation of bio-based and biodegradable products in the UK. The study of the environmental, economic and social impacts of the use of these products in the UK including market and consumer behaviour research into the acceptance and use of these materials and products. Biorefining Bio-based Chemicals Bioplastic Bottles and Packaging Forest Products The BBIA intends principally to represent, in the UK, those industries dealing with Biorefining, Bio-based Chemicals, Enzymes, Bioplastic Bottles and Packaging, considering that Textiles (cotton and wool), Forest Products (timber for energy, construction and paper), and Agriculture and Foresty (farming) are not within our scope, although will often be connected to our mission to promote bio-based and biodegradable products, being suppliers of raw materials and potential customers for our products. The debate and action on matters related to biomaterials such as waste management, soil, air and water quality, farming, climate change, the marine environment, resource issues. In the USA today some 14,000 products made from bio-based materials, many of which are also biodegradable, are listed in the US Government s Preferred Purchasing Programme for bio-based products. We refer to the USA being a country far ahead of the UK on the development of bio-based and biodegradable industries. The US report identifies seven major product categories (excluding energy) derived from bio-based sources:

OUR OBJECTIVES OBJECTIVES To promote the bioeconomy agenda at the centre of the political debate on sustainability and economic growth in the UK as a response, among others, to resource and climate change issues. Create economic, social and political frameworks for the local production, distribution and consumption of biodegradable and bio-based products; to create UK employment and exports through industrial investments in the sector. Activate industrial relations for the promotion of bio-based and biodegradable chemicals in industrial applications (for example, plastics, packaging, adhesives, lubricants, softeners, automobile, engines, paints, coatings, fibres, rubbers, enzymes, solvents, insecticides). Enhance the quality of soils and water systems through the improvement of compost and digestate quality and use in the UK. Bio-based materials and products are those that are intentionally made wholly, or in part, from substances derived from living (or once-living) organisms, such as wood, starches and cellulose. Promote the development and growth of organic waste recovery through promoting separate collection of organic waste, promoting composting and anaerobic digestion and developing the use of bioplastics in the collection systems. Act on the quality of water and soil systems by promoting the use of biodegradable products such as oils, lubricants and mulch films, and their application in wide-ranging industrial, agricultural and consumer markets. Respond on the quality of the marine environment by promoting materials and products whose impact is compatible with marine life and water quality. Biodegradable: materials and waste that are capable of undergoing decomposition into natural substances (such as water, carbon dioxide and biomass) due to bacterial activity. International standards ascertain the extent to which biodegradability takes place in a determined timeframe and context, such as industrial or home composting.

CASE STUDIES THE BIOECONOMY MODEL, WHAT IS THE REALITY? Here are some very short case studies of companies that have adopted the bioeconomy model in the UK and elsewhere: CHEMICALS BASF, the world s largest chemical company whose base is in Germany, have been making ecoflex for over a decade, which is a biodegradable polymer suitable for making compostable plastics; and ecovio a compostable plastic film suitable for dual use bags, mulches, shrink films, paper coating, foam packaging and injection moulding. BIOTEC, located in Germany, develops and manufactures biodegradable and compostable compounds under the trade name BIOPLAST. Using GMO-free potato starch as renewable resource, all BIOPLAST grades are plasticizer-free and suitable for flexible as well as rigid packaging solutions. NOVAMONT is a leading EU manufacturer of bio-based materials. Through the integration in the local territory of chemistry, the environment and agriculture, Novamont has led the development of the first third generation fully integrated biorefinery dedicated primarily to the production of Mater-Bi bioplastics for a range of industrial, agricultural and consumer applications as well as bio-chemicals, e.g. di/mono-carboxylic and other C5-C9 acids and bio-butanediol from renewable resources. PRODUCTS ECOSPRAY is a company formed in 1996 in the UK to develop a natural technology to kill nematodes, the microscopic worms that cause billions of pounds of damage to crops and sports turf worldwide every year. Ecospray technology harnesses the power of 100% pure and natural allyl sulphide technology (derived from garlic) and kills nematodes on contact to significantly reduce crop losses and turf damage without leaving harmful residues, making it safe for the operator, crop and consumer. FUCHS OIL UK is a producer of biodegradable lubricants and products like PLANTO greases, which are ideally suited for use where contact with water or soil may occur e.g. in lock gates, sewage treatment plants, agricultural vehicles etc. PLANTO oils are high performance lubricants based on harvestable raw materials, such as rapeseed and sunflowers, with a combination of downstream esters and specially selected additives. PLANTO products are non-polluting to water, soil and plants and enhance safety for the operator. CROSS SECTOR: AN INTER-FACE BETWEEN WASTE, ENERGY AND CHEMICALS. ABENGOA is a Spanish engineering and energy company (US$7.3 bn turnover in 2014) that has developed refining of energy and the extraction of chemicals from agricultural waste. At its plant built at Hugoton (USA) Abengoa extracts sugars from farm waste to produce aviation fuel; chemicals for use in the production of rubbers, lubricants and additives; and polymers for bioplastics such as bio-based polyesters, polyxylene, polystyrene and poly-propylenes.
