The GreenSource Initiative addresses the environmental needs of proper resource management and higher energy efficacy. It is a natural extension of our corporate philosophy, which is to provide the lighting industry with quality and innovative products. As environmental stewards, we connect our customers, our employees and our business to the betterment of the environment through investment, incentives, manufacturing processes and innovatively designed light sources. It makes perfect sense for today and for future generations to come. Doug Hagen, CEO For more information on the GreenSource Initiative visit us on-line at
Being Green Should Not Be Puzzling W hen it comes to preserving the environment, our companies are an instinctive part of the solution. Join us as we invest in daily habits and basic business practices that lighten our ecological footprint. We all know there are things we can do to preserve our planet, both at home and at work. The desire to be sustainable is important, but we decided that desire without action is not enough. To help solve the puzzle, we are extending our GreenSource Initiative to our customers and design partners. B-K Lighting and TEKA Illumination are making it easier for you to do your part. WHAT IS THE GREENSOURCE INITIATIVE? INCREASE EFFICACY - The First Piece of the Puzzle We ve used the same lighting sources for decades. They lack the efficiency to cope with today s increasing energy demands and costs. Millions of installed products need to be replaced to keep pace with our increasing energy demands. The technology exists today to provide the same high-quality lighting with significantly reduced energy and maintenance costs. Replace any existing luminaire with an equivalent B-K Lighting or TEKA Illumination product. Provide at least 100% improvement in system efficacy, and we will discount the replacement order.* * Change to CFL, Metal Halide, or BKSSL product is required. Rebate amount will be issued as a miscellaneous credit to an authorized distributor at the time of order. RECYCLE PRODUCT - The Second Piece of the Puzzle All products have an operational lifetime. When an existing luminaire reaches end of life, it can easily be recycled. Just send the product back to us, purchase an equivalent product that uses BKSSL technology, and we will discount the new order.** Reduce landfill inputs, decrease carbon emissions, replenish our resources and improve your client s bottom line. Energy conscious investment makes good sense to the environment and good sense for your business. Realize these eco-rewards by participating in our innovative GreenSource Initiative. With B-K Lighting and TEKA Illumination, being green is no longer puzzling. ** Change to CFL, Metal Halide, or BKSSL product is required. Rebate amount will be issued as a miscellaneous credit to an authorized distributor upon receipt and inspection of returned material.
What It Takes to Build a Green Product OUR BUILDING Where We Work Our first-class manufacturing facility sits at the base of the Sierra Mountains, surrounded by orange groves, olive orchards and vineyards. It is a beautiful daily reminder of our commitment to the environment. Lite at Lunch Our Etendue Café, conveniently located on the property, stocks food provided by local farms. Etendue Café uses all recyclable packaging and paper goods. Most importantly, our employees leave our cars parked for lunch, further reducing emissions. Sensors to Dimmers Wasted lighting energy is eliminated with daylight and occupancy sensors and control dimmers installed in all restrooms, supply closets, offices and throughout manufacturing spaces. Track Our CO 2 Reduction Visit for up-to-the-minute tracking of our solar energy production and reduced CO 2 emissions. To date, we have reduced our greenhouse gas emissions by 26,187 pounds per month, or 314,244 pounds per year. Over the next five years that equates to 1,571,220 fewer pounds of CO 2 in the atmosphere the equivalent of removing more than 150 cars off the road for a full year! Powered By The Sun A 240-kilowatt solar electric system transforms the roof into a state-of-the-art renewable energy source. With over 1300 Mitsubishi Electric 170- watt panels, it supplies two-thirds of our overall l electrical power per year. Skylights Sky Bright Natural daylight floods the warehouse floor with state-of-theart solar skylights. A GPS rotation control system tracks the sun with a single mirror that effectively reflects sunlight into the building. The system produces up to 10 times more light than a passive skylight without any draw from line voltage, reducing electricity costs and emissions.
The Essential Piece of the Puzzle OUR PROCESS Our metal and packaging components are made entirely from recycled materials. Corrosion Free Star Finishes partners with B-K Lighting to protect against corrosion with its exclusive StarGuard process. It s completely environmentally safe and RoHS compliant. StarGuard Our system is chromate-free, making it the green choice. The StarGuard system is close-looped and filtered, eliminating all emissions. The residual by-products are rendered completely inert; they are simply dried and disposed of through normal trash pickup. All B-K Lighting products come with a 5-year warranty that covers the finish against color fade, rub or peel-off, corrosion creep and wear. Lights Out B-K Lighting utilizes 8 hours of off-peak energy with no human interface in the process. This allows us to produce luminaires with a minimum amount of electricity. Savings include energy, carbon dioxide emissions, and many other costs associated with operating our business. Customized Packaging Instapak foam minimizes the amount of packaging used without compromising the protection of the products shipped. It s produced without chlorofluorocarbons CFCs) or hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), which have been associated with the depletion of the ozone layer. Instapak is completely recyclable just like the rest of our packaging materials. Cradle-to-Cradle To ensure the sustainability of our products, we encourage them to be returned to us at end of life. Renewable Energy Our products are manufactured using renewable solar energy produced onsite.
What Does It Mean to Be Green? OUR PEOPLE A greener workplace means a lighter ecological footprint, a healthier and more productive place to work, and good news for the bottom line. Our Carpool Program Employees are encouraged and compensated to reduce the number of vehicle miles traveled by carpooling and planning ahead to combine trips. We make a concerted effort to operate our vehicles responsibly. Recycled Resources Recycle bins are conveniently available throughout the building, making it easy to recycle paper, glass, plastic and aluminum. Recycling the Air Real plants in the office add beauty and oxygen to our surroundings. Setting Limits We ve reprogrammed the thermostats. For each degree warmer in the summer or cooler in the winter, we can save 6 to 8 percent in energy usage and costs. Best Business Practices Our office staff minimizes paper and ink usage by reviewing documents onscreen rather than printing them, sending s, receiving electronic faxes and printing on both sides of the paper. Storing files electronically instead of in filing cabinets is preferred. Optimizing Energy Devices All employees have optimized the energy settings for computers and other devices to achieve more than a modest energy savings. By plugging hardware into a power strip with an on/off switch, the whole desktop setup can be turned off at once.
Further Defining the Puzzle OUR PRODUCTS At its heart, the GreenSource Initiative is a committed investment by B-K Lighting and TEKA Illumination to reduce our ecological footprint through effective management of resources, from materials to energy efficiency. Environmental Awareness Design a product that is manufactured from recycled materials and make most of its components recyclable for another use: That is the essence of our product design doctrine. We capture our waste during manufacturing processes for recycling. When the luminaire has surpassed its useful life, most of it is recyclable. Utilizing materials in this manner cuts down on landfill inputs, spares nonrenewable resources, and in fact creates a new resource. Sustainable Materials The copper, brass, steel and bronze used in TEKA Illumination products are meant for long life and low maintenance. These enduring metals are timeless and extraordinarily resistant to environmental corrosion and physical abuse. It is estimated that approximately 80% of all the copper that has ever been mined, after being remelted and reworked numerous times, is still in use today. Energy Efficiency Twenty-five years ago, when B-K Lighting made it a mission to provide innovative products, the MR16 Halogen source was being hailed as an efficient improvement over its predecessor, the incandescent lamp. Fast-forward to today and the evolution of the solid-state lighting source. B-K Lighting and TEKA Illumination are again revolutionizing the lighting industry with applications utilizing this highly efficient source. Solid state is but one innovative, energy efficient source utilized in our luminaires. Take a look at the chart for more efficient alternatives to halogen.
