What is CLIC Innovation
What is CLIC Innovation It is The Open Innovation and Public-Private Partnership R&D&I platform Focused on turning resource scarcity to global business opportunities Initiating and coordinating new competence and business ecosystems for Bio and Circular economy as well as Cleantech and Energy Creating new knowledge and competences for global business Designing and demonstrating comprehensive solutions for systemic challenges Coordinating target-oriented R&D&I-project portfolios A Ltd owned by 29 multinational companies representing 9 industrial sectors and 16 Finnish universities and research institutes

Material Value Chains - ARVI
Material Value Chains - ARVI Systemic approach to management of material value chains, recycling, and their business opportunities

ARVI Research Areas Systemic evolution of business and its local environments Improved knowledge of material flows analyses and foresight Systemic resource efficiency - concept building, modeling and optimisation Plastics, rubber WEEE Municipal waste sludge Ashes
ARVI Results and Key Messages
Results
Plastics and Rubber Key Message Plastics, even recycled, is a material with potential Packaging is plastics largest application area and source of plastic waste Two thirds of household plastic waste consists of monomaterials Sorting improves mechanical properties of recycled plastics and at the best they can come close to those of virgin material Woodplastic composites are promising applications both for municipal and construction and demolition waste plastics, especially if composite recycling is organized The characteristics of recycled plastics and the requirements of applications need to match Plastics recycling can generate environmental benefits if virgin materials can be replaced
Metal Recycling, WEEE Key Message Most out of WEEE, harness the true potential from electronic waste treatment WEEE is one of the most valuable waste stream produced from households WEEE is truly complex, heterogeneous and dynamic waste stream Beside base metals, precious and technical/critical metals are found in significant concentrations in WEEE Losses play relevant role in the whole treatment chain of WEEE which need to be addressed in future
Municipal Solid Waste and Sludge Key Messages Biowaste and plastics are at the most efficient fractions in volume to increase material recovery Mechanical separation is needed Finnish technology solutions have a significant business potential in energy recovery from MSW on the Chinese market Environmental performance Source separation as well as separate collection, composting and anaerobic digestion of organic waste is a sustainable measure for the MSW management in São Paolo LCA study Nitrogen recovery from sewage sludge is a potential method to get bio-based nutrients Biosludge is a potential nitrogen source
Ashes Key Message Added value from thermal residues Utilisation and recovery of valuables require precise knowledge of ash composition Research data helps companies to enhance treatment of recycled materials in decision making related to use
Systemic Circular Economy Key Message Waste and Circular Economy business requires systemic approach and understanding of interconnected business, technology, environmental and socio-cultural system elements Systemic demand and supply Ecosystems Local vs global Stakeholders different roles Social dimension
Database Key Message Open life cycle data increases research transparency, enables true data reliability comparison and analysis and gives companies a tool for proving the sustainability of their operations
Waste Flow Monitoring Key Messages Real-time waste generation monitoring improves solid waste sorting at its source and makes waste collection more effective State-of-the-art analytics create useful information to monitor and implement cost-efficient and sustainable waste management
Summary Comments from the Scientific Advisory Board It was very far-sighted of Finland to initiate an extensive research program on circular economy, which is constantly growing in importance all over the world The ARVI research program established an intensive collaboration between companies and research institutes on various levels, which is very rare It was also exceptional that the research program took into account the social significance of material flows in various countries A global viewpoint was commendably ensured by International collaboration On the whole, the research program generated academically and commercially significant results, which will eventually influence the future of our environment and society The program strengthened Finland s position among forerunners of circular economy Now it is important to maintain activity in the collaboration network and to continue high-quality research in Finland and also in EU programs.
What s next? Building CLIC Circular Economy project portfolio focusing on activities decreasing the environmental impact of material usage by enhancing their life cycle by circulating higher value added products and services Key action is to build a service platform for managing industry large side streams to Improve their utilization Provide sufficient volumes for re-use markets Find them sustainable and valuable use New products Reduce costs
