#: P17487 Name: KonTiki Kiln Heat Recovery System Date: 1/25/2017 Document Owner: Thane Date Completed: 2/19/2017 Time and amount of heat used by recovery system to obtain ideal water temperature Concluded condition of meeting Engineering S1, S2, S3 Test Plan Unit of Measure Ideal Value Marginal Value Comments/Status S1 9 PRP System Temperature Celsius X S2 3 PRP System Temperature Celsius O S3 3 PRP System Money $ <100 <250 O S1 S2 S3 Thermocouple Thermocouple, weather channel Online pricing S1 S2 S3 Use the thermocouple to record temperature information during and after the burn Either checking the weather, or turning the thermocouple on and checking the ambient temperature Sum up the prices of all required parts S1 Starting temp. 16 C 60.8 F Ending temp. 25 C 77 F S2 Air temp C 57 F S3 Final pricing from BOM $ The ending temperature of the reservoir water did not meet the specification. This was due to a lack of regular burn material and windy weather conditions. The air temperature was ideal for testing and the final pricing from the BOM ensured that S2 and S3 were met. Burn material and conditions must be monitored more closely to ensure reproducible results.
#: P17487 Name: KonTiki Kiln Heat Recovery System Date: 1/25/2017 Document Owner: Eta Date Completed: 2/19/2017 Time and amount of heat used by recovery system to obtain ideal water temperature Concluded condition of meeting Engineering S4, S7, S8, S9 Test Plan Unit of Measure Ideal Value Marginal Value Comments/Status S4 9 PRP System Time Minutes X S7 9 PRP System Time Minutes <15 <25 X S8 9 PRP System Energy KJ >8000 >4000 Δ S9 9 PRP System Volume Liters >5 8 Δ S4 S7 S8 S9 Timer Heat recovery system, kiln, burn material, thermocouples Excel, ANSYS S4 S7 S8 S9 Heat recovery system, kiln, burn material, thermocouples Begin timer at ignition. Stop timer at quench. Note how full the kiln is after quenching. Average time values taken from each burn by burn "size". Set up thermocouples as shown in section IV. Begin start time. Note weather and burn conditions throughout the cycle. Record data and analyze for section V. Ensure consistent environmental conditions during each test, if possible. Analyze raw data in post using governing equations to obtain the amount of heat recovered. From raw data, use the amount of heat transferred to predict the relationship between time and volume of water. Verify with follow-up testing on the kiln. S4 Start time 1:44:16 PM End time 2:46:48 PM Burn time duration Minutes S7 Starting water volume Time to heat to ideal temperature 12.3 gal Minutes
S8 Analysis in progress. S9 Due to the convection loop, it is assumed that all water that started in the system is successfully heated. Additionally, the cover on the reservoir decreases the heat losses from convection. A full burn was not completed in this test plan due to lacking burn material and poor environmental conditions (windy). From previous tests, the burn time and volume of water specifications were met. An analysis of the heat transfer is in progress for a transient system. Repeat this test plan during next burn and compare results.
#: P17487 Name: KonTiki Kiln Heat Recovery System Date: 1/25/2017 Document Owner: Eta Date Completed: 2/19/2017 Setup time and other requirements for adding/operating recovery system Concluded condition of meeting Engineering S5, S10, S11, S15, S16, S17 Test Plan Unit of Measure Ideal Value Marginal Value Comments/ Status S5 1 PRP System Time Hrs 2 3 O S10 3 PRP System Time Minutes <30 <45 O S11 1 PRP System of Steps Steps <20 <30 O S15 1 PRP System # of People People 1 2 O S16 1 PRP System Volume m³ O S17 9 PRP System S5 S10 S11 S15 S16 S17 Owner's Manual, Timer S5 S10 S11 S15 S16 S17 # of Burn Hazards Stopwatch, manual of instructions, heat recovery system, kiln, burn mateial Time how long it takes to set up and use system # 2 3 O Start timer. Allow users (preferably users who have not used the system before) to read through instructions then set up the system. Stop timer. Check accuracy of setup and observe areas of difficulty during the setup. Improve on design as needed. Record all the steps in the process while completing a burn from start to finish. Review the process and eliminate any waste. Adjust process as need. Complete a burn with the standard process to ensure that it's functional. Attempt to have a single person operate the entire system, if it can't be done alone, have a second person assist. Run through entire burn cycle to see if loading of the system is inhibited in any way Have each team memeber observe operation of system to seek out potential burn risks. S5
New users are recommended to participate in a full burn demonstration to ensure best practices for biochar production and to observe setup of the system. A full burn ranges from 1-2 hours. S10 Assuming all materials are readily available and at least 2 individuals are present, setup time is on average 15 minutes. S11 of operation steps 16 - S15 Recommended 2 users at minimum to set up the system. Users must also be able to lift the mass requirement specified in S13. S16 There are no obstructions to accessing the open area of the kiln. S17 Operation hazards: Open flame Warning Kiln operation requires interaction with an open flame in the pit. Hot surface Caution Coils will become very hot once operations commence. User should avoid contact as burn injuries are possible. Boiling Water or Steam Warning Count 3 Steam can eject from the coils if not removed properly from the system. User should consult manual of operations before The results of this test plan confirmed that the engineering requirements were in specification. There are 3 main hazards that require attention during training and testing. Document how to deal with operation hazards and recommended users for manual.

The user may select his or her own reservoir and platform types that should follows the maximum mass specification. The number of components is above the target given the numerous connector pieces. Ideally, eliminating some of these components can help decrease the required materials. Use S18 plan to test removal of connector components.
