1 Precious future Meeting the challenges of sustainability
2 Precious future Sustainability promotes metal packaging Rigid metal packaging is an integral part of sustainable living. It is produced in a responsible and efficient manner and is an excellent way of reducing product waste, as the absolute barrier properties of metal packaging protect the valuable contents for the longest possible time. Empac acts as a unified voice for the rigid metal packaging industry throughout Europe. We present views of the industry, make recommendations and voice opinions on the social (people), environmental (planet) and economic (performance) matters affecting us. Our vision to establish metal packaging as a recognised and valuable contributor to sustainability throughout the supply chain and beyond. 9m Cans recycled every hour, worldwide, becoming everything from cans to aeroplanes 2% Estimated fraction of metal packaging in municipal waste in the EU27 7% Recycled steel packaging in Europe in % Recycled steel packaging in Belgium in 200 Front cover: Shredded metal to be smelted and reused. 3 3 Managing responsibly What is sustainability? For us, sustainability is about managing resources and materials responsibly while supporting this with a continuous stream of innovative products and processes. Our aim is to ensure that metal continues to be a widely used packaging material benefiting people, respecting the planet and maximising performance. People Hermetically sealed, metal packaging contributes to keeping food safe and reduces waste by capturing and preserving crops at the moment of harvest. The can acts as a veritable warehouse for an extended period of time, keeping goodness and nutrients in and impurities out. Metal packaging also ensures potentially dangerous goods are moved and stored safely and efficiently. Planet Metal is a permanent material, infinitely 00% recyclable and a leader in recycling resulting in a significant reduction of environmental impacts. Performance Once designed, tried and tested throughout the supply chain, metal packaging provides best in class value with a proven track record in doing more with less across a wide range of applications. Responsible resource management enables us to continue achieving durable improvements and efficiency gains. In order to better represent the benefits of recycling Empac has developed an interactive scorecard which measures key aspects of environmental impact, including an average European carbon footprint. This informs stakeholders in a consistent manner of the strengths of metal packaging, including the undeniable benefits of reduced emissions and energy consumption through recycling. Steel packaging recycling in Europe (%) % 60% 6%63% 55% 63% 66% 69% 7% 72% 7% People Sustainability EU27 (+ Norway and Switzerland), since Planet Performance Industry Objective As an integral part of Metal Packaging Europe, Empac supports the industry aim to achieve an average European recycling rate of 80% by 2020 by working with relevant stakeholders. 4 People Planet The benefits Managing our resources Metal packaging enhances product safety by being both tamper proof as well as virtually unbreakable. Its barrier properties, which keep the goodness in and impurities out ensure that the content safely reaches the consumer, free from contaminants. Combined with a best in class shelf life, our industry s product is an ideal packaging material for many markets. The global metal packaging industry, worth in excess of 20 billion Euros, is a key player in the challenge to feed a growing world population. The metal can captures freshness from harvests across the globe and stores the content for an extended period of time. It acts as a veritable food warehouse. Quality We rigorously adhere to quality compliance schemes for our European employees. Similarly, our industry experts, through the different technical commissions, ensure that our industry is at the forefront in supplying safe, lightweight and modern packaging. Research and development Can manufacturing today is a highly advanced technology driven industry, demanding a skilled workforce, supported by research and development teams and centres of excellence for printing and shaping. Traceability Can manufacturing today encompasses thorough traceability techniques to ensure that we know the origin of all products and are able to deal with queries and safety concerns in the shortest possible time. Using resources efficiently, avoiding spoilage, improving the recovery of materials, in short, responsible resource management, has always been key to the success of the metal packaging industry. Once the metal is extracted and refined from the earth s crust the application may vary, but the permanent characteristics of the material remain forever and allow for infinite use in new products and applications. Through its resource efficiency across the entire supply chain, the metal packaging sector has successfully decoupled market growth from resource use and daily efforts ensure that this continues to be the case. Metal packaging benefits greatly from its inimitable material to material recycling loop. The infinite recycling capability and actual recycling performance gives metal packaging a modest environmental footprint when measured as part of a full product life-cycle, reducing product waste and therefore the environmental impact of products. Metal is one of the most recycled packaging materials in Europe with a European average recycling rate of over 70%. In the last 0 years the recycling rate has improved by almost 50% benefiting from a series of industry led initiatives across Europe. Steel repackaging recycling rates(%) % 0 The Netherlands Germany Belgium Belgium, Germany, and The Netherlands recycle in excess of 88% of steel packaging, illustrating their leadership position. Switzerland, Luxembourg, Sweden, Spain and Norway follow closely behind recycling over 75%. 2 The trend towards increased recycling for steel packaging has been confirmed in Central and Eastern Europe where Slovenia, Romania, Slovakia and Bulgaria are all boosting their recycling performances. APEAL; EAA. 94% data supplied by APEAL. 3 APEAL. 98% Recycling seven steel cans saves enough energy to power a 60-watt light bulb for 26 hours. The recycling process is embedded into steel production, meaning that every steel plant is a recycling plant, producing steel of virgin quality while saving valuable resources 3. 5 Precious metal recycles......again and again Investing in the future Metal is simple to recycle and the infrastructure is already in place and functioning well across much of Europe. There are economic incentives, ready markets and easy collection options. Major investments have been made by the industry into recycling infrastructures, which is why Europe improves its recycling rates every year. Additionally, with a competitive and well developed industry for metal scrap, the economic drivers for further increasing recycling are supported by market forces. Metal Packaging is 00% recyclable, infinitely, without loss of its inherent properties and therefore a permanent material. In other words, metal packaging can be simply recovered, re-melted and turned into a variety of applications again and again. More than 80% of steel is recycled worldwide 2 a leadership position. The benefits of recycling Recycling metal saves significant amounts of resources and energy, benefiting the planet at every step. Each item of recycled steel packaging saves one and a half times its weight of CO2. So the more steel is recycled, the more CO2 emissions are reduced. Recycling one tonne of metal scrap can save up to 75% (steel) and up to 95% (aluminium) of the energy required when making steel from iron ore or primary aluminium from bauxite. Steel s magnetic and aluminium s eddy current properties make metal packaging a very easy and highly economical packaging material to sort and recover. The can you recycle today could become a bicycle or a bridge tomorrow and a can again in the future. The possibilities are endless! APEAL; EAA. 2 World Steel Precious future Precious future 7
6 Performance Competitive and innovative The metal packaging industry in Europe makes in excess of 70 billion units annually and continues to retain a solid share in the highly competitive packaging industry. Many of the factories are located close to customer premises thus reducing the need for transport and increasing overall process efficiency. Metal packaging offers real value and excels throughout the supply chain with highly efficient logistics and outstanding filling speeds. Due to the strength of metal packaging, it can also be stacked over eight metres high, reducing the warehouse footprint and saving space. This is all achieved with almost no secondary packaging. Efficiency carries into the home saving the consumer both time and money. Canned food is portioned, needs no refrigeration and can be eaten straight from the can or reheated quickly before serving because it has already been cooked. Mechanical expansion or blow-forming manufacturing produce beautiful, unusual shaping and embossing Advanced photo-quality metal decoration processes, including offset printing, pre-distortion printing, flexo printing and thermochromic inks provide brands with opportunities for differentiation. Our industry is dedicated to reducing material weight, which is not only good for the environment but also makes good economic sense. 3 years Average shelf life for products in metal packaging Up to,000 Cans manufactured and up to,500 filled per minute per line 8 Precious future Designed and produced by
