National Development Plan 8. Electricity Generation as at Power Generation, Transmission and Electrification Projects 10. Renewable Energy 11. Our Innovations for Industrialisation 12. Common Sources of Energy
Introduction The Ministry of Energy is responsible for the development and management of energy resources in a sustainable manner for the benefit of the people of Zambia. The mandate of the Ministry of Energy is that of providing policy guidance in the Energy Sector of the country.
Portfolio functions The Ministry s portfolio functions include: Implementation of the Energy Policy; Development and management of energy resources which include Hydro Power, Biomass and Coal; Renewable and Alternative Sources of Energy; Management of the Oil Pipeline and Petroleum Procurement, Storage and Pricing.
Zambia s Energy Sector Zambia s energy resources include; hydropower, petroleum, coal, biomass and renewable energy. Petroleum is the only resource which is wholly imported while the country is basically self-sufficient in all other energy resources, as it has substantial unexploited reserves of these forms of energy.
Objective of the Energy Sector In accordance with the National Energy Policy of 2008, the overall objective of the Energy Sector is to create conditions that will ensure the availability of adequate supply of energy from various sources, which are dependable, at the lowest economic, financial, social and environmental cost consistent with national developmental goals.
Energy Sector Goals Until 2016, the major goals for the Energy Sector as defined in the Vision 2030 for Zambia, aimed at achieving universal access to clean, reliable and affordable energy at the lowest total economic, financial, social and environmental cost by This has laid a firm foundation for sustainable energy resources development programs, thereby ensuring integrated-sectoral planning and implementation in energy programs and projects with active participation of all relevant stakeholders.
National Development Plans The Seventh National Development Plan (7NDP) for the period is the successor to the Revised Sixth National Development Plan, (RSNDP) following its expiry in December The Plan, like the three national development plans (NDPs) that preceded it, is aimed at attaining the long term objectives as outlined in the Vision 2030 of becoming a prosperous middle-income country by It builds on the achievements and lessons learnt during the implementation of the previous NDPs.
7NDP The Seventh National Development Plan departs from sectoral-based planning to an integrated (multi-sectoral) development approach under the theme Accelerating development efforts towards the Vision 2030 without leaving anyone behind. Through the use of the integrated multi-sectoral development approach, the 7NDP has the advantage of considering the comparative and competitive advantages of the regions in allocation of resources towards implementation of the multi-sectoral strategies and setting in motion a series of mutually supporting activities in different sectors with the general objective of delivering the national agenda. Ultimately it is envisaged that the integrated development approach in the 7NDP will help change the focus of government line ministries and provinces from competing with each other to coordinated harmonisation.
Goal of 7NDP The goal of the 7NDP is to create a diversified and resilient economy for sustained growth and socioeconomic transformation driven, among others, by agriculture, tourism, manufacturing and mining. Furthermore, this Plan responds to the Smart Zambia transformation agenda 2064 and embeds in it the economic stabilisation and growth necessary for the actualisation of a Smart Zambia. This is in support of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the African Union Agenda 2063.

Renewable Energy Renewable energy is energy that is collected from renewable resources, which are naturally replenished on a human timescale, such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides, waves, and geothermal heat. Renewable energy often provides energy in four important areas: electricity generation, air and water heating/cooling, transportation, and rural (off-grid) energy services
Energy is a key resource that should be developed, harnessed and properly managed. A properly managed energy sector plays a very significant role in the development of any country as it has an impact on productivity of all sectors of the economy.

Energy Sources in Rural Communities
Instead of this. Traditional Mbabulas
Improved braziers The rural communities are now being encouraged to use these.
Liquefied Petroleum Gas The medium income communities are now being encouraged to use these Liquid Petroleum Gas to manage Energy deficit.
We now see more of wind technology
Alternative Energy Sources - Biomas
Gel Fuel
Alternative Energy Sources Geo-thermal
Alternative Energy Sources
Continued support and supervision to the communities to ensure sustenance. For the examples given above, continuous sensitisation on usage is being conducted. The advantages and disadvantages of each alternative energy solution are being disseminated. Safety measures are paramount before use of any energy form. The Ministry has within it s Energy Policy (2008) ensured that safety standards are adhered to before providing any energy related service.
The map below will remind us all of how closely connected we are, hence the need to run in check with one another in terms of Management of the Common Energy forms we use. This is with emphasis on Green energy usage.
Zambia s electricity grid
Energy Concerns the entire SADC region The following link will lead you to the SADC protocol on energy and most importantly, in relation this presentation, the Southern African Power Pool site. (SAPP) Questions
Alternative Energy Sources
In the End We What We Seek to use are.. Renewable Energy Sources.
