2 The SAGR consists of a clean stone bed that is fully aerated using LINEAR FBA aeration. Water flows through the substrate either horizontally or vertically. A layer of insulating mulch at the surface prevents ice formation in the bed, allowing the system to treat wastewater that is near freezing (<0.5 C). Post Lagoon Nitrification and Polishing Designed for cold water treatment, the horizontal SAGR removes ammonia through nitrification (conversion of ammonia to nitrates), following either facultative or aerated lagoons. It is ideally suited for post lagoon applications in severe cold or moderate climates but can also be used in warm climate applications. The process can also be used for final nitrification prior to discharge following any other secondary treatment system. The SAGR provides excellent ammonia removal, while offering BOD and TSS polishing in addition to total coliform, fecal coliform, and e-coli removal. Are there systems operating in climates as cold or colder than the proposed application site? Installations across Canada and the USA include some of the coldest populated areas in North America. Data from these sites demonstrate that the SAGR provides consistent nitrification in hostile climates. What are the maintenance requirements? The only moving parts in the system are the blowers supplying oxygen to SAGR process. A simplified control scheme manages the day-to-day operation of the blowers. Typically, an operator will perform a system inspection using a check-list and on occasion change lubricating oil. Is the system compatible with future upgrades? The SAGR nitrification module is fully compatible with other OPTAER lagoon based processes including phosphorous and total nitrogen removal technologies. Phosphorus removal can be achieved with chemical addition prior to sand filters and a wide range of total nitrogen limits can be met through the use of pre-anoxic zones within the lagoon system or tertiary denitrifying sand filters.

3 Cold Climate Performance Ammonia reduction (nitrification) can be consistently and reliably achieved at water temperatures below 0.5 C in climates where primary and secondary lagoons are ice-covered for much or all of the winter. Providing treatment with very low water temperatures eliminates the need for insulating, increasing depth or decreasing the retention time of lagoon cells to retain heat. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Is a cover required on the upstream lagoons? A cover is not required on the upstream lagoons as the SAGR is designed to treat effluent at very low temperatures, eliminating the need to retain process heat. This increases the flexibility of adapting the process either within or outside of the existing lagoons. Is there data from systems operating at full design loads and flows? The SAGR can follow a wide range of lagoon systems including continuous discharge or controlled discharge facultative or aerated lagoons. It can handle a wide range of influent water qualities without upset, allowing the SAGR to be used as a final BOD and TSS polishing technology in addition to nitrification for lagoons that are exceeding their original design loads and flows. Utilizing existing facultative lagoons as secondary treatment where possible reduces the overall energy requirements needed to provide treatment to tertiary levels. Municipal Effluent Quality at <0.5 C Water Temperatures: CBOD 5 < 5 mg/l TSS < 10 mg/l Ammonia < 1 mg/l Nelson Environmental has collected over 1000 data points over 5 years from two demonstration sites operating at % of full design flow. The facilities in Manitoba and in Saskatchewan, Canada have shown consistent nitrification year round with water temperatures as low as 0.2 C. 70 Total Ammonia (TAN) SAGR Following Aerated Lagoon 60 Influent TAN (mg/l) Effluent TAN (mg/l) mg/l / Water Temp w/ January February March April May June July August September October November December November December 70 cbod and TSS SAGR Following Aerated Lagoon cbod Influent (mg/l) Effluent (mg/l) TSS Influent (mg/l) Effluent (mg/l) February March 40 mg/l / Water Temp w/ January April May June July August September October

4 Decentralized Wastewater Treatment In many circumstances, it is advantageous to treat wastewater near the source, to prevent long distance wastewater conveyance, or for locations where existing centralized systems are at or near treatment capacity. Decentralized wastewater treatment is a common option for industries, commercial facilities, and new residential subdivisions. System effluent quality requirements vary depending on the ultimate effluent discharge point for the system. The SAGR is the ideal solution to meet new effluent requirements for decentralized wastewater treatment facilities. Secondary treatment, consisting of CBOD 5 and TSS removal, is accomplished in an unsaturated vertical flow SAGR which is typically preceded by septic tank retention or low pressure sewer systems with individual holding tanks. The process can be followed by the horizontal flow SAGR to achieve nitrification. The SAGR process generates minimal odors as it operates in fully aerobic conditions. With the reactors located below grade, the SAGR process blends in with the surrounding environment making it ideal for applications where an unobtrusive process is desired. Native plants or grass may be planted in the mulch layer on the SAGR surface to improve system aesthetics. Airport De-icing Fluid Treatment Airports face a unique problem when dealing with stormwater containing glycol based de-icing fluid. Very high CBOD 5 levels, due to glycol combined with flows that increase rapidly as the snow melts, result in a wastewater stream that is difficult to treat in a conventional suspended growth system. De-icing pads are designed to drain as quickly as possible, which can result in significant peaking factors in downstream treatment systems. The very high loading spikes and low water temperatures can cause upsets in treatment systems and can result in significant surcharges, when discharging to a municipal wastewater treatment system, or extensive environmental damage, when discharged directly to a receiving stream. The vertical flow SAGR is the ideal solution for CBOD5 reduction when treating of airport stormwater contaminated with aircraft de-icing fluid. The SAGR is an attached growth system, maintaining biomass within the system. The biomass provides the ability to ramp up treatment very quickly, even with cold water temperatures. SAGR treatment process removes up to 98% percent of CBOD 5 in airport stormwater runoff contaminated with glycol in de-icing fluid, effectively handling peak loadings up to 10,000 mg/l CBOD 5 with cold water temperatures without losing biomass.
