Regional Habitat Indicators Project Workshop #1 Nov 9, 2016
Workshop Objectives Vet recommendations for management questions with Fist-to-Five Review and identify missing indicators Identify criteria for evaluating indicators
Today s Schedule Process Overview Top Questions Work done to-date What is fist-to-five vetting process Top questions and why these are recommended by the workgroups How they ranked in the regional survey Fist-to-five group vetting of the top questions ID Indicators Review current list of potential indicators Identify additional indicators that are missing (add to list) Review group amended list Evaluation Criteria Small groups develop suggested set of criteria Report back to group Aim to reach agreement on a final set of criteria
Today s Desired Outcomes Confirm the 3 management questions for each workgroup (flow, temperature, macroinvertebrates, WQI) Contribute to a draft list of potential indicators for the selected management questions that will inform regional survey content Develop and agree on a list of criteria that will be used to evaluate potential indicators and inform the selection process
RHIP Desired Outcomes 1. Develop recommendations for: Short list of questions, indicators, and objectives for each topic area How to improve indicator data compatibility and accessibility How to improve reporting for the identified indicators 2. Organizations across the region choose to report these indicators and to implement the recommendations for improving data and reporting
Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec Process to select MQs Kickoff Meeting Compiled over 70 questions Survey 1 evaluated against 5 criteria Work groups reworded questions as needed Survey 2 voted for top 3 IWGs reviewed results, discussed, and picked their top 3 Final step today workshop participants will vet recommendations
Fist-to-Five State the question Does everyone agree we should move forward with MQ1? 1, 2, 3, vote! Everyone votes at the same time, hands held high Each person votes by holding up 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 fingers
5 fingers Absolutely, very important question 4 fingers I like this question, I support moving forward 3 fingers The question is okay 2 fingers I have some concerns, but I ll go along 1 finger 0 fingers I have serious reservations with this question, but I vote to move forward, but I d prefer to resolve concerns before supporting it Terrible question, I will not go along with it (be prepared to discuss why and propose an alternative)
Survey results, MQ recommendations, and discussion
Flow Recommended Questions 1. Are stream flows meeting established targets for native fish populations and other aquatic species? 2. Are flows achieving a more natural hydrological pattern that reflects seasonal fluctuations, rate of fluctuations, peaks, etc.? 3. Is climate change affecting stream flow needed for populations of native fish and other aquatic species?
5 fingers Absolutely, very important question 4 fingers I like this question, I support moving forward 3 fingers The question is okay 2 fingers I have some concerns, but I ll go along 1 finger 0 fingers I have serious reservations with this question, but I vote to move forward, but I d prefer to resolve concerns before supporting it Terrible question, I will not go along with it (be prepared to discuss why and propose an alternative)
Macroinvertebrates Recommended Questions 1. Are environmental conditions supporting macroinvertebrate communities and meeting established targets? 2. What are the causes of biological impairments (e.g. sediment, nutrients, temperature)? 3. Is climate change affecting macroinvertebrate composition or abundance needed for sustainable fish populations?
5 fingers Absolutely, very important question 4 fingers I like this question, I support moving forward 3 fingers The question is okay 2 fingers I have some concerns, but I ll go along 1 finger 0 fingers I have serious reservations with this question, but I vote to move forward, but I d prefer to resolve concerns before supporting it Terrible question, I will not go along with it (be prepared to discuss why and propose an alternative)

Stream Temperature Recommended Questions 1. Are cold water refugia adequately identified and protected? 2. Are state water temperature standards for salmon, steelhead, or bull trout exceeded? How often and where? Are stream temperature conditions generally trending towards achieving targets that support native fish species? 3. Is climate change affecting the stream temperature needed for populations of native fish and other aquatic species?

Water Quality Index Recommended Questions 1. Are water quality targets being met? Is water quality adequate to support targeted species? Are trends in water quality improving? 2. Is climate change affecting the chemical attributes of water quality needed for populations of native fish and other aquatic species?
5 fingers Absolutely, very important question 4 fingers I like this question, I support moving forward 3 fingers The question is okay 2 fingers I have some concerns, but I ll go along 1 finger 0 fingers I have serious reservations with this question, but I vote to move forward, but I d prefer to resolve concerns before supporting it Terrible question, I will not go along with it (be prepared to discuss why and propose an alternative)
