7 BUILD OWN OPERATE AGREEMENT FROM EVOQUA HELPS CHEMICAL PLANT MAXIMIZE RELIABILITY The raw river water treatment system that this Gulf Coast facility had been self-operating for 40 years had become a bottleneck for plant production. The labor-intensive system utilized warm lime softening pretreatment technology. As part of a 15-year agreement, Evoqua implemented a turnkey water treatment solution that featured a new, compact, highly automated, 3,400 gpm ultra-filtration (UF) and reverse osmosis (RO) system that is achieving 99.9% reliability. A portion of the RO product water is now polished downstream by the plant-owned demineralizer system for use in its boilers. The remaining water is used in the plant s cooling towers and other support processes. Lacking a nearby source of suitable water or a place to discharge wastewater, the operation faced major challenges in providing the treated water it required. As part of a 10-year contract with Evoqua, the plant s needs are now being met by piping low hardness municipal wastewater effluent 12 miles into a system designed, built, owned, and operated by Evoqua. The treatment system consists of activated carbon filtration, double-pass RO, and mixed bed deionization technology.
