3 Overview of EPUE in the EU SET-Plan policy context EUA joined the European Energy Research Alliance (EERA) in an observer capacity (October 2008) EPUE was born in the First meeting of the expert delegates selected by the EUA National Rectors Conferences (March 2009) The platform of universities created by EUA was acknowledged officially in EC Communication (October 2009) EPUE was recognised to take a leading role in the SET Plan Energy Education and Training Initiative (December 2011) 3

6 Gathering First Evidence of Research, Doctorates and Masters The EPUE Questionnaire For energy research activity, Doctoral Programmes and Master Programmes: Fields of knowledge (classified in three broad areas): Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) Biotechnology, Medical, Life Sciences (BML) Economic, Social Sciences, Humanitities (ESSH) Master Programmes: Human resources capacity in research Partnerships: academic and non-academic Budget: Funding sources and ratio devoted to energy-related research topics. Interest on EERA research fields 6
7 EPUE Activity since 2009 (1) Nine EPUE Steering Group meetings, to agree on action lines and positions/opinions in policy developments at European level Participation in EERA Executive Committee meetings in an observer capacity, representing the university sector, and in SET Plan Conferences EPUE Questionnaire design and launch (November 2009): to identify university research and training capacity in the field of energy with the objective to build the EPUE Questionnaire outcomes analysis Input to the public consultation Towards a new Energy Strategy for Europe (July 2010) 7
