3 Ecosystems provide services to society that promotes human well-being Millennium ecosystem assessment Largest assessment of the health of Earth s ecosystems Was carried out between 2001 and 2005, to assess the consequences of ecosystem change for human well-being, and to establish the scientific basis for action needed to enhance the conservation and sustainable use of ecosystems and their contribution to human well-being. 7 Initiative in 2007: The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB) Potsdam, March 2007: meeting of the environment ministers of the G8 + 5 Heiligendam, June 2007 : agenda endorsed Potsdam by heads Initiative of state Biological Diversity 2010 meeting 1) The economic significance of the global loss of biological diversity In a global study we will initiate the process of analysing the global economic benefit of biological diversity, the costs of the loss of biodiversity and the failure to take protective measures versus the costs of effective conservation.

8 Objectives of TEEB: assessing the value of biodiversity & ecosystem services Draw attention to the global economic benefits from ecosystems Highlight the growing cost of biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation Demonstrate how biodiversity, ecosystems & their services have multiple values to economy, society, business & individuals Show how / help to integrate these values into everyday decision-making

13 EUs biodiversity targets By 2050, European Union biodiversity and the ecosystem services it provides its natural capital are protected, valued and appropriately restored for biodiversity s intrinsic value and for their essential contribution to human wellbeing and economic prosperity, and so that catastrophic changes caused by the loss of biodiversity are avoided. By 2020, Halt the loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services in the EU and restore them insofar as feasible, and step up the EU's contribution to averting global biodiversity loss.

16 Aim of the workshop: To address and discuss different ways to assess and value ecosystem services in forests, with a special focus on non-marketed elements such as biodiversity, climate regulation/carbon sequestration and recreation To address different approaches and tools for integrating values of the different ecosystem services into decision making
