The Green Spirit of Kouvola The business vision is supported and the strategy is guided by value anchors All operations of Kouvola are supported by three value anchors, which are combined under a shared slogan, "The Green Spirit of Kouvola". Kouvola: The Way of Open Innovation We promote the renewal of businesses through innovative, location-independent cooperation networks Finland's best network facilitator for the operational models and utilisation of open innovation Kouvola promoting an environmentally sound business sector: The Green Way of Kouvola In all business operations, we develop increasingly environmentally friendly operating models The smallest carbon footprint in Finland An interactive and community-oriented Kouvola: The Digital Way of Kouvola In an open-minded and determined way, we develop services in the information network for all residents of the municipality, and for enterprises in the area Finland's most efficient and caring city 11
One of the four development areas is forrest, energy and environment Within this sector, the main areas are: bio energy timber construction 12
Timber Development Competition - Towards sustainable and climate friendly development Prochure in english: XYSpCE/E2flyer_130510_eng.pdf 13
The teams have the following tasks: 1. Propose a solution for design, manufacturing, installation, and other relevant methods or services progressing wooden multi-story developments that meet high requirements for energy-efficiency (nearly passive energy level). 2. Demonstrate the feasibilty of the proposal on a pilot site in the City of Kouvola considering the evaluation criteria. 3. Envision new business ideas related to proposal or supporting its functions and/or products. 14
Assessment criteria 1. The quality of the industrial concept The potential for an industrial breakthrough and entrepreneurship related to wooden multi-story buildings in forms of solutions, products, methods or other commercial ideas. The adaptability of the proposal to diverse sites considering the local starting points: local identity, attractiveness, meaning of location and taking advantage of the location. 2. Architecture Architectural and urban quality Functional feasibility, effectiveness, and flexibility Potential for variable building and apartment layouts and suitability for diverse inhabitants 15
Assessment criteria 3. Energy and material efficiency Energy-efficiency and environmental friendliness 4. Feasibility and cost-effectiveness Cost-effectiveness Durability and quality of technical solutions Fire safety and its innovative solutions Feasibility and potential for phased implementation 16
